The UW-River Falls Falcons started off their WIAC opener against UW-Stevens Point down 2-0 before coming back to win 3-2 with
Dani Kocina and
Amy Auran scoring their first collegiate goals in the game.
"I thought we played really well tonight," said Falcon Coach
Joe Cranston. "We showed determination after being down 2- to start and coming back to win."
The first period was a fast paced start with few stoppages and only two penalities. UWRF had six shots on goal while UWSP only managed three all by Ali Biagini who scored on her third shot at 15:37 to give the Pointers the lead.
The second period was the most action packed of the game. Biagini found the back of the net again at 13:21 to put UWSP up 2-0 in the game.
UWRF had a strong effort from their defensive unit only giving up six second period shots to the Pointers while the Falcons poured in 15 second period shots. "Our defense played espicailly well and really closed the gap which was the biggest difference in the game," Cranston said.
The Falcons answered just over a minute later when
Karleigh Wolkerstorfer found the back of the net for her first goal of the season when she scored on the rebound opportunity assisted by
Emily Stark.
With just over a minute left in the period
Kendal Evenson found Kocina right in front of the net who lit the lamp to tie the game at two goals apiece.
The Falcons won the shots on goal battle again in the third period with eight to UWSP's four. The only goal of the period came when
Brianna Breiland fit in a perfect pass from the far corner to Auran who scored the go-ahead-goal.
Angie Hall finished the game with 11 saves in the victory. UWRF improves to 3-1 on the season and handed UWSP their first loss of the season as they drop to 4-1 overall. The two teams meet again tomorrow at Hunt Arena with the drop of the puck set for 2:05 p.m.
