Men's Hockey Comes Back To Win 5-3 Over Augsburg In Home Opener

Leabo Scores Goal, Two Assists

The UW-River Falls Falcons came back to win 5-3 over Augsburg in front of a big crowd at Hunt Arena in their home opener.

After scoring a goal in the first period the Falcons allowed three second period goals but poured in three third period goals to come back and get the victory.

Terry Leabo scored his first goal as a Falcon from the inside circle at 14:43 off an assist by Kyle Gatteralo.

In the second period Augsburg tied the game up when they scoredo on a powerplay goal just over three minutes in. Both teams had four power play opportunites in the game. Augsburg scored the one goal with four shot attempts on their opportunites while UWRF scored two goals on five shots.

Augsburg added another goal just over seven minutes into the period. At the 11 minute mark Gatteralo scored a power play goal off a beautiful Ryan Doner crossing pass. Just one minute later Augsburg answered and took the 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

While Augsburg controlled shots on goal all night with 31 compared to UWRF's 22 and had 10 in the third period compared to the Falcons seven, it was quality over quanity for UWRF with three third period goals. The first one came from Alex Murphy who has been playing red hot when he sniped in a power play goal with assists coming from Leabo and Doner. Murphy already has six goals on the season.

Murphy and Leabo both put on nice passes and Burden put a nice move on the goalie to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead with just under seven minutes left in the game. Down the stretch Tanner Milliron recorded big save after big save holding the lead for UWRF and finished with 28 saves on the day.

The final goal came when Burden hit Mitch Kotny with a pass who put on a fancy move to Blake Huppert who finished the play off with an empty net goal with only 24 sconds left in the game.

The Falcons improve to 4-0 on the season and will play Lawrence University at home next Friday with the drop of the puck set for 7:05 p.m.
