Soccer Advances to WIAC Playoff Semifinals

UWRF Plays at UW-Whitewater on Thursday

Box Score

The Falcon soccer team has advanced to the WIAC playoff semifinals and now faces the WIAC's No. 1 seed - UW-Whitewater (17-2).

The game will be played on Thursday and starts at 6 p.m., at Whitewater.

UWRF earned an exciting 1-0 overtime win over UW-La Crosse on Tuesday at Ramer Field in the first round of the playoffs. Abby Soderholm drilled home the game-winner with just four seconds to play in the first overtime. She was assisted by Alex Swatloski. Goalie Erica Cimochowski made three saves.

"We are looking forward to a great rematch against Whitewater," said Falcon Coach Sean McKuras. "We are playing great soccer at the right time of year. I believe that our best is yet to come."

UWW is ranked No. 9 in this week's NSCAA poll. Earlier this year in Whitewater the Warhawks beat the Falcons, 2-0. The loss snapped a Falcon six-game unbeated streak. But the Falcons rebounded after that loss to win three straight.

Swatloski leads the Falcons with 13 goals and 31points. Soderholm is second with 10 goals and 24 points. Kenzie Weisman leads UWRF with eight assists. Cimochowski has a 12-5-3 record with an .86 goals against average.

In the other WIAC semifinal, UW-Eau Claire (8-9-2) travels to UW-Oshkosh (10-7-1) with that game starting at 6 p.m., on Thursday. Eau Claire advanced with a 1-0 win over UW-Stout. The two semifinal winners will play on Saturday for the championship at the site of the highest remaining seeded team at a time to be determined.

UWW leads in the all-time series with the Falcons, 15-9-2. But the Falcons are 3-2 in WIAC playoff games against UWW. UWRF is 13-17-2 all-time in WIAC playoff games. The WIAC playoffs started in 1992 and UWRF first year as a varsity program was 1994. The Falcons have played in all but two seasons of the league playoffs. The team's best finish was in 1997 when they placed second, losing the championship game to Stevens Point, 1-0.
