Smethers Scores Two Touchdowns As Football Falls 34-23 At Stout

Both Teams Combined For 34 Points In Second Quarter

After a slow first quarter the UW-River Falls Falcons and the UW-Stout Blue Devils combined for 34 points in the second quarter with the Falcons eventually falling 34-23 in the WIAC battle.

Robbie Flom took the opening kickoff 56 yards when he faked a reverse play and went flying down the field putting UWRF in great field position on their first drive. The Falcons proceeded to run nine plays taking 5:04 off the clock but only managed 26 yards before settling for a 29 yard Ryan Kusilek field goal to make him 6-6 on the season. The field goal would be the only score of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter Stout took the ball all the way to the Falcons one yard line before an offensive pass interference call forced them to a third and goal from the sixteen. Garret Peterson launched a jump ball to the far side corner for receiver Aaron Jenny on the next play for the games first touchdown. Peterson and Jenny both had big games for the Blue Devils.

With 9:31 to go in the second quarter UWRF was put in a third and ten situation from the Blue Devil 38 yard line. Kusilek was flushed out of the pocket on the play and throw the ball up to Wade Smethers who bobbled the ball and took a hit but came up with the touchdown for his career long. The extra point was blocked making it a 9-7 game. The blocked extra point would proceed to have an impact on the game moving forward.

On the very next possession Stout moved the ball to the UWRF 36 before being faced with a big fourth and three play. Stout went for it and Peterson's target on the play dropped the ball which fell into the arms of Zach Loos who took the ball all the way to the Stout thirteen before having ball punched out. Another Falcon attempted to pick up the loose ball and run it but also fumbled before Derek Tarter corralled the ball at the four yard line and ran it in for the Falcon touchdown which put them up 16-7 at the time.

Late in the first half despite being pinned on their own side of the field Stout tried to get something going. With 47 seconds left in the half Charles Register came up with an interception for the Falcons taking the ball to the Stout 19 yard line. On the next play Kusilek again found Smethers, this time on a screen pass where Smethers broke a tackle and made a nice spin move on his way to the end zone. Kusilek went 11-25 for 161 total yards and tossed two touchdowns. The two touchdowns were Smethers only grabs of the game accounting for 57 yards.

UWRF attempted what looked like a suprise onside or a squib kick gone wrong following the touchdown putting Stout in great field position. The Blue Devils ran two quick plays that set up a hail Mary connection from 38 yards out from Peterson to Jenny to make it 23-14 going into half.

After the crazy second quarter things slowed down in the third quarter with the only score coming from a Stout 30 yard field goal with just over five minutes left in the quarter.

All game long Stout ran a bubble screen play to Cody Rosemeyer who finished with 13 catches. With just over 12 minutes to go in the game they faked the bubble screen play and Peterson tossed the ball to a wide open Matt Small for a 25 yard touchdown play giving Stout a 24-23 lead.

UWRF could not make anything happen on the following drive and punted right back to the Blue Devils who took the momentum and rode with it as Peterson and Jenny hooked up one last time for a 39 yard touchdown.

After another drive faltered with all there time outs UWRF decided to punt the ball back to the Blue Devils with just over four minutes left in the game. Stout would ice the game when freshman kicker Tayor Pahl drilled his career long 42 yard field goal which bounced in off the right upright.

The Falcons were led in rushing by Nick Zimmerman with 45 total yards on 14 carries. Will Jensen had a strong day punting pinning the Blue Devils inside their own 20 two different times and the defense was led by Flom, Tyler Ledbeter, and Luke Radke who each had nine tackles and Albert Itula who finished with eight tackles.

UWRF falls to 3-6 on the season and will play their final game of the season at home against UW-Whitewater next Saturday with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
