Women's Basketball Falls In WIAC Opener 66-56 To Superior

Theisen Scores 17 Points In Loss

It was a back and forth game all of the first half, but UW-Superior pulled away in the second half to grab a road win at UW-River Falls on Wednesday night leaving River Falls with a 66-56 victory.

The first half was tight with the lead never getting to be more than four points. Kate Theisen hit a layup at the 10:30 mark to give the Falcons' the biggest lead of the first half at 11-7. The WIAC opponents traded leads with Superior taking a 25-22 lead at the half.

Superior never gave up the lead in the second half. Less than five minutes into the second half, Superior had built a 13 point lead. The Superior charge built to a crescendo of a 17 point lead with a little over eight minutes left of the game after Grace Kennedy hit a jumper.

Randi Mehus and Ali Clark came off the bench to give UWRF a spark in the second half with Mehus hitting two big threes and Clark adding a strong post presence but it was not enough to overcome the fast past attack from Superior.

The Falcons started to fight back, but ran out of time. Taylor Karge banked in a three-pointer from the top of the arch to make it a nine-point game with 1:11 left. Richell Mehus hit a three with 28 seconds left to get it down to a eight point lead for Superior. Free throws would make the final score a 10 point differential with Superior reigning victorious, 66-56.

Theisen led the way for the Falcons in the scoring column with 17 points. Richell Mehus was the only other Falcon to reach double-digits with a 10 point game.

The Falcons fall to 3-4 on the season play their next game on Saturday. The game is a home match against UW-Eau Claire with tip off set for 3 p.m.
