After going into halftime with a five point lead the UW-River Falls Falcons fell in overtime, 65-57 to the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties.
UWRF got off to a quick start making both their first shots with Taylor Karge scoring a layup and Jessie Van Wyhe drilling a wide open three. UWRF would never trail in the first half and took a 33-28 lead into halftime. Karge was a force down low with nine first half points and Kate Theisen, coming off her record breaking night the last time out, had six points at the half.
35. GAC went up 43-36 at one point before the Falcons went on a run. A couple Theisen free throws and a Hannah Pignato lay up pulled UWRF within two with eight minutes left in the half. Later Cassy Saxton who played her first game of the season after an injury hit back to back three pointers to give the Falcons a 47-46 lead with 5:03 left in the half.
Late in the game with UWRF holding on to a three point lead the Gusties hit a three pointer with 26 seconds left. UWRF held on for the last shot and Richell Mehus got a good look attacking the basket but was blocked as time expired.
Van Wyhe led UWRF with four overtime points but GAC controlled the five minutes of play to seal the victory. The Falcons shot 21-53 (39.6%) from the field but were struggled at the free throw line making just 11-27 (40.7%) in the game.
Mehus led with 11 points while also grabbing seven boards and had four of the teams 16 steals. Katie Messman also had four steals while Van Wyhe and Pignato each had three. Theisen led in rebounding with 10 while adding nine points.
GAC improves to 8-2 on the season while UWRF falls7 overall. The Falcons will play again this Saturday with a WIAC Whitewater with start time set for 3 p .m.
