Box Score The UW-River Falls women's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a tough 2-1 double-overtime loss at St. Mary's Cardinals on Sunday afternoon in Winona, Minnesota.
Freshman midfielder
Abby Soderholm (Burnsville, Minn.) scored the lone Falcons goal in her first collegiate game to put UWRF in the lead, 1-0, just 25:04 into the first half. Junior midfielder
Jenna Marier assisted on the opening goal that slipped by Cardinals freshman goaltender Victoria Perez.
The Cardinals tied the contest with 13:50 left the second half after freshman forward Emily Loof beat Falcons sophomore goaltender
Erica Cimochowski (0-1). The tying goal was assisted by junior midfielder Caroline Blackwood.
Loof scored her second career goal at the 104:55 mark of the second overtime to ice the game and seal the victory for the Cardinals. Freshman midfielder Carina Friend assisted the winning goal.
Cimochowski made three saves in the loss. Perez made four saves, while senior goaltender Miranda Halling (1-0) made three saves for St. Mary's, earning her the victory in relief of Perez. The Falcons outshot the Cardinals 8-5, but the veteran Halling stood tall in the second half and overall.

Megan Haninger led UWRF with two shots on goal apiece. Soderholm and senior striker
Alex Swatloski led the Falcons with four attempted shots each.
The Falcons' record against St. Mary's dropped to 5-2. UWRF only committed seven fouls and three offsides, and attempted 10 more shots than the Cardinals but came up short.Â
The Falcons take the field next against Hamline University on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Falcons are 6-3 all-time against Hamline.
