The UW-River Falls Falcons came out with a big 4-2 win at UW-Stevens Point coming off a 1-0 loss the night before led by
Kyle Gattelaro's two goals.
The only goal of the first period came when
Ryan Doner scored off assists from
Mitch Kontny and
Terry Leabo for his sixth of the season 8:28 into the period.
UWSP had the only power play opportunity of the first period but had it killed off by the Falcons. With under two minutes left in the period the Pointers tied the game up when Lawrence Cornellier found the back of the net.
Early in the second period the Falcons went on the power play and took advantage of it on the last second of it when
Taylor Burden found Gattelaro.
The Falcons were able to kill of another penalty just under ten minutes into the period and scored another goal at 10:08 when Kontny scored his sixth of the season assisted by
Mike Williams who picked up his third of the season.
Gattelaro scored an early third period goal for his eighth of the season with Burden again picking up an assist along with
Christian George. The assist bumped Burden up to 10 on the season and George has three.
UWSP was able to take advantage of a Falcon penalty scoring a goal to pull within two at 6:01 and went right back on the power play at the 7:29 mark but UWRF killed that one off. With just under five minutes left in the game UWSP went on one more power play but again the Falcons killed it off to keep the two goal lead.
The Falcons finished with 19 shots on goal while
Tanner Milliron gloved 21 of the 23 shots on goal by UWSP to move to 13-2-1 on the season. UWRF went 1-2 on power play chances while holding the Pointers to 1-5 on power play opportunities.
UWRF moves to 14-2-1 on the season and 3-1 in the WIAC while UWSP drops to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC. They will play again at home in a weekend series against UW-Eau Claire with the drop of the puck set for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
