Women's Hockey Topples St. Scholastica 4-1

Falcons sophomore forward Karleigh Wolkerstorfer scores twice as UW-River Falls defeats St. Scholastica 4-1 in Duluth, Minnesota.

The UW-River Falls women's hockey team toppled the College of St. Scholastica Saints on Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-1 thanks to a two-goal effort from Falcons sophomore forward Karleigh Wolkerstorfer.

The Saints struck first early in the first period, but UWRF went on to score four straight times in route to the road victory. Falcons freshman forward Carly Moran also contributed a goal and an assist for UWRF, while freshman goaltender Angie Hall (10-3) only needed to make four saves on five shots.

"We played really well today," said Head Coach Joe Cranston. "We started out a little slow in the first, but then we moved our feet and moved the puck as well as we have all year. It was great since we allowed just five shots on goal the entire game."

Saints freshman forward Amanda Broman scored the opening goal at 7:27 of the first period on the Saints' only power play opportunity of the contest. Broman's third goal of the season was scored on just the second shot of the game for St. Scholastica. The assists were credited to sophomore forward Anja Kadijevich and freshman forward Zahn Thompson.

Moran answered at 14:31 of the first period with her 10th goal of her career, beating Saints sophomore goaltender Lindsey Hartfiel (3-7-1). The assists were credited to junior forward Chloe Kinsel, her team-leading 17th, and sophomore defenseman Paige Johnson, her 10th. Kinsel now has 96 career points, the fifth most in program history. Shots on goal in the first period were 13-4 in favor of UWRF, but the Falcons went 0-1 on the power play.

Wolkerstorfer scored her first goal of the game, which eventually proved to be the game-winning goal, at 7:16 of the second period to push the Falcon lead to 2-1. Wolkerstorfer's seventh of the year was assisted by sophomore forward Dani Sibley and senior defenseman Allie Olson. Sibley is now second on the team with 12 assists, while Olson earned just her second of the year.

Falcons sophomore forward Brianna Breiland doubled to lead to 3-1 just 18 seconds later with her second goal of the season. The lone assist was credited to senior captain forward Alice Cranston, who hit double figures with the assist, giving her 47 assists and 94 points in her four-year career. Cranston is sixth all-time in program history. UWRF outshot St. Scholastica 17-0 in the dominant second period.

Wolkerstorfer put the nail in the coffin with 11:23 left in the third period with her second goal of the contest and eighth of the season. Moran and freshman forward Amy Auran were credited with the assists. Moran's assist was her eighth of the season, giving her a total of 18 points in 16 career games. Auran's assist was her first in a Falcon uniform. UWRF outshot St. Scholastica 7-1 in the third period, as the Falcons took its foot off the gas pedal late in the period. UWRF did go 0-2 on the power play in the third.

UWRF outshot the Saints 37-5 overall on the afternoon. Hartfiel stopped 33 shots in the defeat. UWRF won 53.8 percent of the faceoffs; Cranston was dominant in the faceoff circle going 19-5. Kinsel led UWRF with eight shots on goal, while Breiland fired seven of her own.

The seventh nationally ranked Falcons improve to 13-3 overall, 5-1 on the road, and has now won four straight. St. Scholastica drops to 7-8-1 overall, 5-5 at home, and has now lost four straight.

The Falcons hit the road once again next weekend to take on the UW-Stevens Point Pointers on Friday and Saturday in a key WIAC matchup. The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
