After a thrilling victory in their last time out, the UW-River Falls Falcons fell on Wednesday night to the UW-Stout Blue Devils 57-55 despite both Kate Theisen and Richell Mehis hitting double digits in rebounding.
The Blue Devils and Falcons kept in a close game in the first half. It was back and forth with the lead barely getting above five points for almost the entirety of the half. Stout grabbed their biggest lead of the half right before the buzzer when Katelynn Folkers hit a free throw shot to make it a six point lead. That six point lead would give Stout a 34-28 lead at the half.
The Falcons started to claw away right away in the second half. Less than four minutes into the second half, River Falls had the game tied up and the lead taken thanks to a pair of free throws from Theisen.
Like the first half, the second half was a back and forth game. The Falcons had a lead of three and the Blue Devils at one time had a seven point lead, but it was all tied up once again with less than two minutes left of the game. With 1:55 on the clock, Theisen hit another free throw to tie it up.
Only one more shot would fall for the rest of the game. The shot would not be falling for the Falcons as Folkers came up big for the Blue Devils with a layup to give Stout a two-point edge.
Freshmen Taylor Karge missed a three pointer and a layup after in the Falcons' frantic attempt to tie the game. Theisen rebounded Karge's missed layup and missed a shot of her own as rhe Falcons fell 57-55.
Theisen and Karge led the Falcons in scoring with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Theisen recorded a double-double by grabbing 12 rebounds additionally. Richell Mehus also cleaned the glass for the Falcons pulling down 12 boards.
Kyleigh Hebert led the Blue Devils in points with 13. Brea Boomer and Folkers also put in double-digits. Folkers notched a double-double for Stout with 12 rebounds.
The loss drops the Falcons to 2-6 in the WIAC with an overall record of 7-10. Stout improves to a 3-5 WIAC record and 5-12 overall.
The Falcons next play on Saturda and will face off against UW-La Crosse in River Falls with Tip off set for 3 p.m.
