Women's Basketball Falls 59-51 To Oshkosh Led By 13 Points, Seven Rebounds From Karge

Falcons Still Searching For First WIAC WIn After Battling No. 11 Oshkosh In Close Loss

The UW-River Falls Falcons came close to upsetting the UW-Oshkosh Titans, No. 11 in the d3hoops.com poll, but fell 59-51 led by Taylor Karge's 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Titans jumped out to a 10-4 lead early on and again 16-8 with 13:22 left before UWRF went on a run. Hannah Pignato and Ali Clark each scored on lay-ups and Cassy Saxton drilled a three followed by an old fashioned three point play with a layup and free throw with 10:02 left in the first half to give the Falcons their first lead of the game at 18-16.

The teams continued to swap the lead the rest of the half as the Titans took a 30-29 lead into halftime. Karge and Saxton led the way at half with seven and six points respectively.

It took just about three minutes into the second half before either team scored when the Titans connected on a shot from behind the arc. Oshkosh led 35-29 early in the half before Richell Mehus banked in a three to bring UWRF within three. Two Karge lay ups gave UWRF the lead back with 14:29 left to go. With 11:33 to go Oshkosh again took a six point lead.

UWRF would not go away as Theisen pulled them within three again before two more Titan baskets gave them a seven point lead with 9:10 to go. Again the Falcons came back strong as Katie Messman drilled a big three and Pignato hit a jumper to make it a two point game with 5:22 left in the game. With 2:20 left Messman hit another three to give UWRF their final lead before Oshkosh scored eight straight points to seal the victory.

The Falcons finished 21-50 from the field (42%) and 5-16 from behind the arc (31.3%) while hitting 4-7 from the line (57.1%). Theisen was the second leading scorer on the team with nine points while Messman and Cassy Saxton each had six and Mehus added five. Jessie Van Wyhe led with eight rebounds and Mehus had a team high five assists.

The Falcons hit the court again on Saturday against UW-Platteville at home for their alumni game with tip off set for 3 p.m.
