This time, the Falcons (10-2, 5-1 WIAC) traveled to St. Peter, Minnesota to take on the Gusties and got the same result, as the Falcons picked up a 2-1 overtime victory.
In their matchup two days before, the Falcons left no doubt as they scored four-second period goals on their way to an easy victory. This time, there was more drama, as the Falcons needed a goal from sophomore forward Carly Moran in overtime to dispose of the Gusties.
It was a defensive standoff in the first period, as neither team could find the back of the net. Combined, Falcon goaltender Angie Hall and Gustavus goaltender Amanda DiNella stopped 11 shots.
It took the Falcons the first period and almost five minutes of the second period to find the back of the net. It finally happened when sophomore forward Amy Auran buried a shot past the Gustavus goaltender. Almost three minutes later, the Gusties knotted up the score by sneaking a shot past Hall to make the score 1-1.
The pair of goals scored within two-and-a-half minutes of each other were the only goals scored in the second period. There were plenty of opportunities for the Gusties to score more goals, as they outshot the Falcons 11-6.
Just like the first period, the Falcons ramped up the defensive pressure on the Gusties, as they only allowed three shots-on-goal. UWRF had plenty of opportunities to take the lead, as the Falcons got nine shots on goal but the Falcons could not cash in on any of those opportunities.
Three periods were not enough to decide the game, so the Falcons and Gusties had to decide the game in overtime. The overtime period did not last long. Just 32 seconds into overtime, Moran buried the game winning shot past DiNella. The victory puts the Falcons' record at 10-2.
UW-River Falls held a 23-18 edge in shots on goal and goaltender Angie Hall stopped 22 out of 23 shots that she faced. The Falcons were edged in the faceoff category, as the Gusties won 31 faceoffs to the Falcons' 23 faceoff wins.
