The scoreboard shows it was close, but the Falcons were in control all night long on Wednesday night as UW-River Falls defeated UW-Stout 77-73 in a WIAC matchup.
It was all River Falls. Only the starting 0-0 score and a 4-4 tie at the 16:16 minute mark in the first half were times when the Falcons did not have the lead.
River Falls reached their highest lead in the first half courtesy of a pair of free throws from
Connor Goodwin with a little more than five minutes left in the half to make it an 18 point spread at 33-17. Stout would fight back and cut the Falcon lead to seven at the half.
The Falcons flew out of the gate in the second half. With 13:19 left, UWRF reached their highest lead of the game with a 20 point margin thanks to a
Garret Pearson layup. Stout would fight back and get the Falcon lead under 10 points for good with 3:37 left, but UWRF would hold on for the four-point, 77-73 victory.
Jon Christensen led a trio of Falcons in scoring with 16. Christensen also pulled down 14 boards for is fourt double-double of the season.
CJ Lewis contributed 15 and Pearson added 14 points off the bench. Twelve Falcons saw the floor on Wednesday.
Stout saw four players reach double digits. The leader in the Stout clubhouse was Jalen Patterson with 15 points.
With the loss, Stout stays winless in the WIAC with an 0-13 conference record. Stout is 3-19 overall. River Falls improves to 8-5 in the WIAC and 10-12 overall.
The Falcons play next on Saturday traveling to UW-Whitewater with a 5 p.m. tipoff.
