Box Score The UW-River Falls (18-6-1) wrapped up their regular season play in a 3-2 loss at UW-Eau Claire (17-6-2) despite
Tanner Milliron recording a career high 43 saves. Both teams will meet again in the WIAC postseason next weekend.
The first period was a hard hitting 20 minutes of scoreless hockey with both UWEC goalie Jay Deo and UWRF goalie
Tanner Milliron making great saves. UWRF ripped 10 shots on goal while going 0-3 on the power play in the period while the Blugolds put 13 shots on net and went 0-2 on their power play.
The second period was a much different story than the first.
Mike Williams scored his fourth goal of the season to break the tie at 5:25 when he tipped in an
Alex Murphy shot who picked up his sixth assist of the season on the play.
Christian George lit the lamp for a power play goal at 8:02 which was his 10th goal of the season.
Kyle Gattelaro who finishes the regular season as the UWRF leading scorer was given an assist on the goal for his 12th of the season.
The Blugolds came up with a big short handed goal at 9:26 to pull within one goal. A cross ice pass led to a power play goal at 12:26 for UWEC beating Milliron top shelf on his glove side to make it a 2-2 game.
Both teams continued their chippy and physical play combining for 18 penalties for 36 minutes after the first two periods. UWRF took 11 shots on goal in the second period while giving up 13 to UWEC. The Falcons went 1-6 on the power play in the period while the Bulgolds went 0-1 on their chance.
UWEC scored to break the tie in the third period when River Falls native Ross Anderson scored on a toe drag in the slot at 5:53 which would go on to be the
UWRF took five shots on goal in the third period and finished with 26 in the game while going 1-11 on the power play. UWEC had 20 shots in the period and 4 in the game with Milliron saving 43 of them and went 0-5 on the power play.
UWRF will play UWEC again next weekend in the first round of the WIAC playoffs at Eau Claire with the first game of the best of three series set for Friday night with a time yet to be determined.
