Women’s Soccer Closes Out St. Scholastica

Box Score

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com)- The University of Wisconsin-River Falls women's soccer team scored three straight goals in the second half on their way to a 3-1 victory over non-conference foe the College of St. Scholastica.

Offense was at a premium for both teams, as the Falcons and the Saints were quick to stop any offensive attack that either team would have. The first real scoring opportunity came from the Falcons when sophomore forward Kayla Windingstad put a shot on the Saints goalkeeper. Saints goalkeeper Kelsey Reeves was up to the task, as she stopped Windingstad's shot.

Two minutes later, senior forward Lizzy Bruder had a scoring opportunity of her own when she put a shot on goal. Once again, the Saints goalkeeper stopped a Falcon shot on goal.

About 90 seconds later, St. Scholastica got their first shot on goal, but could not capitalize because junior goalkeeper Erica Cimochowski stopped the Saints header shot.

Bruder was the offensive catalyst for the Falcons, as she would get two more shots on goal in the first half.

UWRF would have one more scoring opportunity in the first half when senior midfielder Megan Haninger peppered the Saints goalkeeper, but could not get it past her.

The lack of offense in the first half was made up in the second half when the Falcons and the Saints scored a total of four goals.

At the 49:48 mark, the Saints were the first on the board when the Saints Becca Rancour slid the ball past Cimochowski to make the score 1-0. This would be the only time that St. Scholastica would score, as Cimochowski and the rest of her teammates put the clamps on the Saints offensive attack.

The Falcons countered with a goal of their own when Windingstad found sophomore midfielder Abby Soderholm for a game-tying goal.

The teams would trade shots on goal until the Falcons broke the 1-1 tie at the 83:20 mark. Bruder and sophomore defender Maddie Bleick found senior midfielder Jenna Marier for her first goal of the season.

Marier's first goal of the season could not have come at a better time.

Six minutes later, UWRF would add an insurance goal from Windingstad to make the score 3-1. Windingstad's goal would be her second of the season and Bruder assisted the goal.

The Falcons were able get 15 shots with 11 of them getting to the Saints goalkeeper. Windingstad and Bruder were able to pace the Falcons with four and three shots apiece. Cimochowski and the defense were solid all night, as they only allowed three shots on goal.

The Falcons now stand at 4-5-1, and they are back in action on Saturday, October 3 when they host conference foe UW-Whitewater. The match is scheduled to being at 5:30 p.m.
