Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com)- The 8
th ranked UW-River Falls Women's Hockey team (14-2-1) battled conference rival UW-Stevens Point (10-7-2) at Hunt Arena Friday night.
Chloe Kinsel scored with 27 seconds left to go in the game to give the Falcons a thrilling hard fought 4-3 victory.
The Falcons started the first period with a good few mintues of pressure in the offensive zone leading to a couple of good scoring chances but nothing found the back of the net. Both teams settled into a good defensive game after the first couple minutes keeping the puck away from their goal.
At 7:38 in the period
Jessie Andersen was called for hooking and sent the Pointers the first power play of the period. The Falcon penalty killers were up to the challenge as senior
Dani Buehrer played stout defense and cleared the puck down the ice and blocked several shots on the penalty kill.
Not long after the Falcons killed off Andersen's penalty, they would get their shot at a power play when at 11:07 in the period Rachel Raynard was called for checking. The Falcons would need just 30 seconds of power play time to find the back of the net.
Dani Sibley passed the puck to
Carina Randazzo in the slot and she slapped a shot past the pointer goaltender to put the Falcons up 1-0.
Three minutes after the Falcons scored they were sent to the power play again, when at 14:20 the Pointers were called for interference. Less than a minute into the power play the Falcons were called for high sticking and it led to 4 on 4 hockey. The Pointers had a short 1:09 power play that the Falcons killed off very easily not allowing a shot on goal.
The Falcons continued to pressure after they killed the penalty off and their pressure led to the Falcons drawing an interference penalty on the Pointers at 19:35. The period ended with the Falcons up 1-0 and looking at a 1:36 power play to start the second period. The Falcons out shot the Pointers 7-6 in the first period.
The second period began with the Falcons on the power play. The Falcons created some good scoring chances on the power play but could not get one past the Pointer goal tender.
At 4:09 in the second period the Falcons were called for checking. The penalty killers of the Falcons struck first in the Pointer power play when
Dani Sibley took a pass from
Paige Johnson and skated throug the slot and fired a wrist shot to the back of the net for a short handed goal. The goal pushed the Falcon lead to 2-0.
The two goal Falcon lead would not last long however. The Pointers answered at the 5:42 mark when Cara Lemirande scored a power play goal on a wrist shot from the circle cutting the Falcon lead to 1.
Less than a minute after the Pointers pulled within 1 they were called for checking and sent the Falcons to their first of two consecutive power plays. The Falcons created a few scoring chances from the point but could not find the back of the net.
36 seconds after the first penalty was killed the Falcons were sent to the power play again when the Pointers were called for slashing. The Falcons created scoring chances on this power play as well with some redirected shots in front of the net, but could not beat the Pointer netminder.
After 4 mintues of power play time the Pointers would finally answer at the 13:12 mark and tie the game at 2. Ali Biagini scored for the Pointers and she was assisted on the goal by Ellie Punnett.
The rest of the second period was filled with end to end action with scoring chances created by both teams, but neither team could break the 2-2 tie. The Falcons outshot the Pointers 10-8 in the period.
The third period started with the Falcons buzzing in the offensive zone looking to break the tie. The Falcon pressure led to the first of 7 penalties called in the period. At 1:07 in the period the Hailey Rock was called for holding and the Falcons went to an early power play. The Falcons couldn't get much going on the power play and when the power play ended the Pointers created to great scoring chances but
Angie Hall made two big saves to keep the score tied at 2.
The Falcon penalty killers were up next when at the 3:36 mark of the period
Karleigh Wolkerstorfer was called for hooking. The Falcon penalty killers not only killed off the power play, but also created the best scoring chance of the power play when they had a 2 on 1 break that lead to Stevens Point being called for tripping which whiped out the last 20 seconds of power play time. The teams skated 4 on 4 for the next 30 seconds and the Falcons would go on another power play.
The ensuing Falcon power play lasted less than a minute when at the 6:28 mark the Falcons'
Dani Buehrer was called for interference and it put the teams back to skating 4 on 4. The Falcons would take advantage of the extra ice in 4 on 4 hockey when at 6:36
Dani Sibley would strike from the slot for her second goal of the game, putting the Falcons up 3-2.
The game would stay tight for the rest of the period and late in the period the Pointers would pull their goalie for an extra attacker. The extra attacker would pay off for the Pointers at 18:53 the Pointers' Ali Biagini would score her scecond goal of the game to tie the score at 3 and it looked like the game was headed for overtime.
The Falcons would get 1 more power play as the Pointers' Betsy Anderson was called for interference with 41 seconds left to go in the game. The Falcons wasted little time taking advantage of the power play this time, 14 seconds into the power play
Paige Johnson would find
Chloe Kinsel at the side of the net and Chloe roofed a wrist shot over the shoulder of the goalie for the game winning power play goal. The goal was Chloe's 19
th on the season and the assist was Paige's third assist of the game.
The Falcons would go on to run the last 27 seconds out as the Pointers never got the puck close to the Falcon net.
Angie Hall finished with 24 saves on the night pushing her record for the season to 13-2-1.
The same two teams battle tomorrow at Hunt Arena. Puck drop is set for 2:05pm.
