Falcons Drop First Home Game to Titans

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – Facing the fifth ranked UW-Oshkosh Titans, the UW-River Falls football team was defeated for the first time at home by a score of 41-7.  
 
THE RUNDOWN

WHAT HAPPENED
  • On the opening drive of the game, the Falcons moved the ball into Oshkosh territory but ultimately punted with Owen Schommer pinning the Titans inside their own 20 at the 13 yard line.
  • Oshkosh used plays of 28 and 13 yards to get down to the Falcons 14 yard line and settled for a 31 yard field goal to take the lead 3-0 at 7:34 of the first quarter.
  • After a few punts back and forth, UW-Oshkosh quarterback Brett Kasper was intercepted by senior safety Robbie Flom. Flom gave the Falcons the ball at their own 40 yard line with 2:38 to go in the first quarter.
  • UWRF used the momentum from the Flom interception to march down to the Oshkosh 20 yard line before attempting a 37 yard field goal. Francisco Perez was blocked by Johnny Egan and returned 11 yards by Nick Amato to give the Titans the ball still up by a score of 3-0 early in the second quarter.
  • Oshkosh used the blocked field goal to slowly drive down to the River Falls 16 yard line. Once again the defense stepped up in the form of Flom. Flom forced a Dylan Hecker fumble and Matt Ekman fell on the ball to keep Oshkosh off the board.
  • Unable to move the ball, UWRF punted and the Titans went 67 yards to score the first touchdown of the game. Hecker was the one to plunge into the end zone and Oshkosh led 10-0 with just 3:42 to go in the first half.
  • On the following drive, UWRF was forced to punt before a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Falcons second life on the drive. River Falls would reach the Oshkosh 26 yard line before a Sawyer Moon pass was intercepted with just one minute to go and the WIAC leading UW-Oshkosh defense kept the Falcons off the board once again. The Titans took a 10-0 lead into the halftime break.
  • Receiving in the second half, Oshkosh took their first drive and settled for a 38 yard field goal to take a 13-0 lead.
  • The Falcons would be stopped on a fourth down before a 51 yard touchdown broke open the lead to 20-0 with 10:43 to go in the third quarter.
  • UW-Oshkosh would go on to score the next 21 points to take a 41-0 lead over the host Falcons.
  • UWRF got on the board in the fourth quarter with a drive started by quarterback Travon Hearns and finished by Moon with a pass to freshman Alex Hohenstein for his first career touchdown as a Falcon.

IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • UW-River Falls totaled 279 yards in the game. 161 came via the passing attack and 118 on the ground.
  • Moon totaled 100 yards and a touchdown in the game. Hearns completed eight of his 11 attempts for 61 yards.
  • Michael Diggins led the Falcons in rushing with 43 total yards and Brandon McCarthy had 25 yards to add.
  • Wide receiver Tyler Halverson had a solid day catching the ball. He caught eight passes for a total of 80 yards. He is second on the team with 414 total yards and two touchdowns.
  • In the game the Falcons completed passes to seven different receivers including three to Hohenstein, two to Seth Hau, two to Trenton Monson, and two to Nicholas Studer.
  • The Falcons defense forced two Titan turnovers which were led by Flom. Flom also led the team in tackles with eight, six of them coming as solo tackles.
  • Matt Ekman also had eight tackles in the game to add to his fumble recovery. Linebacker Kyle Semann had seven tackles as well.
  • Jay Robinson and Andrew Brooks each had one tackle for loss in the game.

THE OPPOSITION
  • UW-Oshkosh totaled 544 yards in the game with an even attack of 262 passing and 282 rushing.
  • Quarterback Brett Kasper completed 15 of 26 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He was not sacked in the game.
  • The Titans rushing attack was headed by Chad Walton who carried just nine times for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
  • CJ Blackburn had 52 yards on three catches to lead the receivers for UW-Oshkosh.
  • Reese Dziedzic was the Titans leader in tackles with eight. One of them being a sack for a loss of eight yards.
  • Oshkosh had a total of two sacks in the game, the first time any team has sacked a River Falls quarterback more than once.

LOOKING AHEAD
UW-River Falls now heads to Whitewater to battle the number two UW-Whitewater Warhawks (8-0, 5-0 WIAC) who are coming off a 48-6 victory over UW-Eau Claire. The Falcons will host UW-Stevens Point (5-3, 2-3 WIAC) to wrap up their season.
