Falcons Extend Winning Streak to Eight

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The No. 22 UW-River Falls Falcons ran away with their eighth straight win over St. Olaf at Karges Center 66-51 and moved to 3-0 at home on parents night.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • In total, 16 different Falcons played in the game, 11 of them scored, and the UW-River Falls men's basketball team extended their winning streak to eight games, the longest since 2010-11.
  • UWRF scored the first six points of the game, with a highlight play by junior forward Alex Herink on a steal and dunk which put momentum on the Falcon's side early.
  • Up seven, the Olies would claw back and eventually take the lead 10-9 with just under 14 minutes to go in the first half.
  • The teams exchanged blows for the next 11 minutes, with the lead changing seven times during that span.
  • Down one, Clay Seifert nailed a triple and gave the Falcons the lead with 3:31 to go in the first half. The Falcons would go on to end the half on a 10-1 run and go into the locker room up 30-22.
  • UWRF would not trail in the second half, with the Olies coming only as close as four points during the half.
  • UWRF ramped up the defense in the second half. The Falcons allowed just three points during an eight minute span in the second half, putting the team up by 15 at the end of that span with 6:09 to go in the game.
  • Up big, the Falcons turned to their bench. All 16 available players played during the game, with guys like Austin Heidecker and Kyle Junker getting baskets to help seal the Falcons victory.   
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Herink led the team with 13 points on 6-11 shooting. He added six rebounds and two steals to his performance.
  • Chris Laymon had a steller night off the bench for UWRF. He scored nine points on 3-5 shooting, including two three pointers, in just 12 minutes of action.
  • Garret Pearson was big on the glass for UW-River Falls. He collected 10 rebounds and added eight points as well.
  • Clay Seifert score seven points in his first start of the season on 3-7 shooting. Devin Buckley also scored seven points.
  • From the floor, UWRF was 26-61 (42.6 percent) and sank five three pointers in the contest.
  • On the glass, the Falcons dominated with a total of 44 rebounds to the Olies 31.

THE OPPOSITION
  • The Olies had two scorers in double-figures. Robert Tobroxen scored 15 and Nate Albers scored 11 off the bench.
  • St. Olaf was 20-49 (40.8 percent) from the field. Four of their 20 three pointers connected.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
UWRF will begin 2017 with WIAC basketball. The Falcons open up conference play with a home game against seventh ranked UW-Eau Claire (10-1, 0-0 WIAC) on January 4th at 7 p.m. Last season the Falcons split the season series with the Blugolds.
