Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrsports.com)- The UW-River Falls Women's Hockey team looked to clinch the WIAC regular season title as they took on UW-Eau Claire at Hunt Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons got a pair of goals from
Carly Moran and 3 points from
Chloe Kinsel as the Falcons downed the Blugolds 3-2. The Falcons dominated most of the game, out shooting the Blugolds 32-10. The victory clinched the WIAC Regular Season Championship for the Falcons!
The Falcons came out on fire in the first period on Saturday afternoon and dominated the first period of action. The first three minutes of the game saw the Falcons sustain pressure in the offensive end, firing shots at the Eau Claire net minder. The Falcons would not be able to find the net on the initial rush, but did draw a penalty at the 4:18 mark of the period putting them on the power play.
The Blugold penalty killers made things rough on the Falcon power play, not allowing them to get setup in the offensive zone until the penalty was half way over. Once the Falcons got setup in the offensive zone, they generated a few scoring chances but could not take the lead.
The Falcons continued their dominating performance after the power play, owning most of the puck possession time over the next 10 minutes. The Falcons would generate multiple good scoring chances in front of the net, including a couple of odd man rushes and even hit the post once.
The Falcons would finally break the scoreless tie at the 17:03 mark when
Chloe Kinsel took a great saucer pass from
Carly Moran, split the Blugold defense and fired a shot top shelf past the Blugold net minder. The goal was Chloe's 22
nd of the season and it was
Carly Moran's 11
th assist.
The Falcons dominated the rest of the period, firing more shots on the Eau Claire goalie, but could not push their lead to 2. The first period ended with the Falcons up 1-0. The Falcons impressingly out shot the Blugolds 16-1 in the period.
The second period began just like the first period, with the Falcons controlling the game. The Falcons once again sustained offensive pressure for the first five minutes of the period generating scoring chances and keeping the Blugolds in their own zone for extended periods of time.
The game shifted in the vistitors favor at the 5:56 mark when
Carina Randazzo was called for slashing. On the ensuing Blugold power play, they would tie the score at 1, when Jaedyn Walz came around the back of the net and stuffed the puck past
Angie Hall.
After the power play the Blugolds would strike again at the 9:00 mark of the period to take a 2-1 lead. Lexi Wilson shot a bouncing puck past the Falcon netminder.
The Falcons would not take long to tie the game up at 2. 22 seconds later
Chloe Kinsel skated the puck in across the blueline and fired a shot on goal which got knocked out to
Carly Moran who found the back of the net. The goal was Moran's 16
th of the season.
The Falcons continued to come after the Blugolds for the rest of the period. At the 18:05 mark coincedental penalties were called on both teams leading to 4 on 4 hockey. During the 4 on4
Chloe Kinsel drew a tripping penalty from the Blugolds' Erin Goodell. The Falcons ended the period with a 4 on 3 power play and had 1:23 left on the power play when the third period starts. The period ended Falcons out shooting the Blugolds 16-7, but the score was tied at 2.
The third period started with the Falcons on a power play. The Falcons pressured early on the power play, but could not break the 2-2 tie.
After the power play the Falcons continued to dominate the Blugolds and it paid off at the 3:56 mark when the Falcons would go on their second power play of the period. Once again the Falcons would pressure and generate great scoring chances on the power play, but were unable to break the tie.
The Falcons would finally break through at the 8:11 mark of the period when
Carly Moran would strike for her second goal of the game. She was assisted on the goal by
Chloe Kinsel. The goal was Moran's 17
th of the season.
The Falcons would continue to dominate the rest of the third period and just as the Blugolds would pull their goalie for the extra attacker, Eau Claire's Jennifer Thomsen was called for checking at the 18:36 mark of the period.
The Falcons would end the game as they began it, dominating puck possession and firing shots at the UW-Eau Claire net. The third period ended with the score Falcons 3, and Blugolds 2. The Falcons would end up out shooting the Blugolds 32-10.
Angie Hall finished with 8 saves and pushed her record to 16-5-1 on the season.
Carly Moran with 2 goals, 1 assist and
Chloe Kinsel with 1 goal and 2 assists both finished the night with 3 points.
The Falcons are back in action Feb. 17
th, when they travel to take on St. Scholastica, puck drop is set for 7pm.
