Box Score DULUTH, MN (uwrfsports.com)- The UW-River Falls Women's Hockey team traveled to Duluth, MN to take on the College of St. Scholastica on Wednesday night. The Falcons came back from an early 1 goal deficit to score 3 straight, to beat the Saints 3-2. With the win the Falcons pushed their overall record to 18-5-1.
The Saints used their home ice advantage to get out to a fast start. The fast start produced the first goal of the game at the 5:52 mark of the first period, when Ivy Smith found the back of the net to put the Saints up 1-0 over the Falcons early in the first.
The Falcons would settle into their game and begin to sustain pressure in the offensive end against the Saints. The Falcons owned the next 10 minutes of the period generating numerous scoring chances and firing 12 shots at the Saints net over that time. The extended pressure lead to Amanda Broman being called for hooking, sending the Falcons to the power play.
The Falcons would generate a few scoring chances on the ensuing power play, but could not tie the score at 1. 21 seconds after power play the Falcon penalty killers would be tested when
Dani Kocina was called for tripping at the 18:08 mark of the 1
st period.
The Falcons would take the Saints' power play and use it to their advantage. The Falcon penalty killers did not allow the Saints to get anything going and with about 15 seconds left in the period the Falcons would go on the offensive.
Carly Moran would take a pass from
Dani Sibley and beat the Saints' netminder to tie the game up at 1. The shorthanded goal was Carly's 2
nd shorthander of the season and the Falcons' 8
th of the year which currently ranks the Falcons 1
st in the nation in that category.
The first period ended with the score tied at 1, and the Falcons still having to kill 8 seconds left of the penalty to
Dani Kocina to start the 2
nd period. The Falcons out shot the Saints 12-4 in the period.
The Falcons would come out flying in the second period. They killed off the final 8 seconds of the penalty, and then continued to pressure in the offensive end, and it looked like the Falcons might take the lead but
Amy Auran's shot hit off the post and bounced out. The sustained pressure lead the Saints to be called for another penalty.
At the 3:18 mark of the period Brandi Malwitz was called for checking, sending the Falcons to their 2
nd power play of the game. The Falcons would generate some quality scoring chances during the power play but could not take the lead.
After the power play the Falcons would continue to pressure in the offensive zone, firing 9 shots at the Saints' netminder, but could not take the lead. At the 14:09 mark of the period the Falcons would take their first lead of the night when
Jillayne Gilbert would find the back of the net on an unassisted goal. The goal was Gilbert's 3
rd of the season.
The Falcon penalty killers would tested again later in the period, when at the 15:45 mark of the period
Emily Stark was called for checking. Once again the Falcon penalty killers were up to the taske as they blocked 4 different shots on the power play and not allowing any shot to get to their goaltender
Angie Hall.
The second period ended with the Falcons up 2-1. The Falcons out shot the Saints in the second period 7-5.
The Falcons would come out in the third period much like the second period, controlling the game. The Falcons would generate pressure in the offensive end creating scoring chances, but unable to add to their lead. The extended pressure again would create a power play opportunity when the Saints' Brandi Malwitz was called for her second penalty of the night at the 7:36 mark of the period. The Falcons were unable to take advantage of the ensuing power play, only generated a couple of shots on net.
The Falcons would get another chance on the power when Brandi Malwitz was called for her third penalty of the night and second of the period at the 11:38 mark of the period. The Falcons would need just 25 seconds of power play time to push their lead to 2. The Falcons' power play goal was scored by
Ashley Effertz, her second goal of the season. She was assisted on the goal by
Chloe Kinsel and
Carly Moran.
The power play goal put the Falcons up 3-1. The Saints would add a late even strength goal with just over a minute left in the period to pull within 1. The Saints would pull their goalie, but the Falcons would hold on for a 3-2 win.
The Falcons out shot the Saints 31-13, and
Angie Hall collected 11 saves to get the win for the Falcons. Hall pushes her season record to 18-5-1.
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday February 20
th, when they travel to take on WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire, in a WIAC playoff preview. Puck drop is set for 2pm.
