Box Score Superior, Wis. (uwrfsports.com)- The UW-River Falls women's hockey team traveled to Superior Saturday afternoon for a clash with conference foe, UW-Superior. Senior forward Chloe Kinsel notched two points in the contest to lead the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over the Yellowjackets. The win moves UWRF to 16-4-1 overall and 7-3 in WIAC play.
The Falcons were looking to avenge last weekend's 3-1 loss to the Yellowjackets and they came out firing. UWRF outshot the hosts 16-1 in the first period, but Superior goaltender Sky Brown managed to keep the Falcons at bay. With just under two minutes left to play in the period, River Falls freshman Victoria Holman was called for checking, sending her to the penalty box and the Yellowjackets on the power play.
Despite being shorthanded, the Falcons were able to find the back of the net. With just 15 seconds left in the first period, sophomore Carly Moran slipped a shot past Brown to put UWRF ahead 1-0. Kinsel was credited with the assist, her 13th of the season, while the goal was Moran's 14th of the year.
The second period proved to be a little less lopsided, as the Falcons tallied 11 shots on goal to the Yellowjackets' 10. UWRF recorded their only power play of the game in the second stanza, as Superior's Lynne Larson was called for hooking at the 8:05 mark. The Falcons were unable to take advantage of the power play opportunity and the teams headed into the final period with the score still 1-0 in favor of UWRF.
The third period continued the way of the second for much of the period, with neither team being able to find the back of the net. In a last ditch effort to even the score, Superior pulled their goalie with just one minute left to play. UWRF took advantage of the empty net and with just 36 seconds left to play, Kinsel scored to put the Falcons ahead 2-0 and put the game out of reach for the Yellowjackets. Freshman Ashley Effertz was credited with the assist on Kinsel's 20th goal of the season.
Superior wouldn't go away quietly, as Karen Larson managed to slip the puck past UWRF goaltender Angie Hall to cut the deficit to 1 with just 21 seconds to play. It wasn't enough as the Falcons were able to hold on and take home the 2-1 victory.
UWRF held a 42-20 edge in shots in the contest. Hall stopped 19 shots for the Falcons while Brown tallied 40 saves on the day. River Falls won 26 of 47 faceoffs in the game.
River Falls is back in action on Tuesday, February 9, when they play host to Adrian College. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
