ST. PAUL, Minn. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls softball team battled the #20 St. Catherine University Wildcats to a 13 inning 6-7 loss Tuesday afternoon.
Michelle LaCasse took the ball for the Falcons and pitched 12 and two thirds of an inning. LaCasse allowed seven runs on eleven hits and also struck out three batters.
Opposing LaCasse and taking the mound for the Wildcats was Krista Flugstad who went 12 and one thirds innings while allowing five runs on eleven hits. Flugstad took a no decision in the game as Wildcat pitcher Megan Lindenfelser would pick up the win.
UW-River Falls controlled the pace for most of the game as they scored the games first run when
Kaia Dorn singled home
Abby Veloske in the top of the second inning.
The Wildcats would eventually strike in the bottom of the sixth inning when Flugstad doubled scoring Ashley Sis to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
The Falcons would take the lead again in the top of the ninth when
Katie Thompson scored on an error by the catcher, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Falcons. However, River Falls was not done scoring in the ninth as
Erin Ralph singled in
Shannan Borchardt to push the game to 3-1.
St. Catherine's University struck back in the bottom of the ninth when Ashley Sis scored on a passed ball and again when Robyn Rohr singled in Jenna George to tie the game and send it further into extras.
The Falcons scored again in the top of the tenth on the RBI scoring single by
Sarah Sorensen that brought in Dorn to make the score 4-3 Falcons.
Ashley Sis singled in a run for the Wildcats in the bottom of the tenth to tie things up again.
The game would be tied all the way up until the 13
th inning when
Shannan Borchardt struck an absolute moon shot to drive in
Amber Galloway. This homerun pushed the score to 6-4 Falcons.
However the feisty Wildcats would claw their way back into the game and would score three runs on two hits to take the game at its final score of 7-6.
The Falcons travel next to Carleton College on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 P.M. to take on the Knights who are currently 4-10 on the early season.
