Falcons Split With Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The UW-River Falls softball team split their double header with UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon.  The Falcons scored 13 runs on 26 hits in the two games.  In game one, they won the extra inning game 9-8.  In game two, they lost in the 7th inning 4-5 after the Pointers hit a walk off homerun in the bottom of the 7th.

Game One: UW-River Falls 9 UW-Stevens Point 8
 
Michelle LaCasse took the ball and stepped into the circle for the Falcons in game one and earned her seventh win of the season on Sunday afternoon. LaCasse allowed eight earned runs on twelve hits and also surrendered four walks while adding four strikeouts in nine full innings of work.
 
Maddie Durie and Averi Kanyuh split time in the circle for the Pointers in game one. Durie pitched the first five and one thirds innings for the Pointers and allowed four earned runs on ten Falcon hits. Durie also added three strikeouts to her season tally. Kanyuh came on in relief for Durie and pitched the final three and two thirds innings as she allowed two earned runs on just three hits and also walked two Falcon batters.
 
The Pointers started off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Justine Ertl singled and drove in Bailie Sheahan. Morgan Johnson doubled to drive in both Ertl and Alyssa Cooper to make the score 3-0 after the first inning.
 
Shannon Borchardt singled to start off the second inning and was out at second base when Sarah Sorensen reached on a fielder's choice. Sorensen was brought in on Mady Bunnell's double. At the end of their half of the inning the Falcons had brought the score closer as the score now stood at 3-1 Pointers.
 
Alyssa Cooper doubled in both Kanyuh and Sheahan in the bottom of the second to push the score to 5-1 in favor of the Pointers.
 
Abby Veloske singled and advanced to second on Aiyana Ledwein's single to start the top of the third inning. Both Veloske and Ledwein were brought in on Ali Murray's double. Mady Bunnell singled and advanced to second on the throw that also allowed Borchardt and Katie Thompson to score. After the Falcons half of the third inning the score was all tied up at five runs apiece.
 
Uhlenbrauck's single in the bottom of the fourth brought in Sheahan as the Pointers retook the lead at the score of 6-5.
 
The Falcons retied the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning when Hannah Zurn picked up a single and then advanced all the way home on an error by third baseman which also allowed Abby Veloske to reach third base.
 
The Falcons took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Katie Thompson hit a homerun that scored Ali Krohn. This homerun was Thompson's second homerun in as many days. After the end of their half of the seventh inning the score was 8-6 in favor of the Falcons.
 
 
The Pointers tied the game back up in the bottom of the seventh Morgan Johnson tripled to bring in Kitzing. Johnson was brought in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Payton Mix. The scoreboard read 8-8 after seven and the game was headed to extra innings.
 
The top of the ninth brought Michelle LaCasse to the plate and the pitcher helped her cause when she hit a deep fly out of the ballpark for the lead and the eventual 9-9-8 win, as she would finish things out in the circle in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Game Two: UW-Stevens Point 5 UW-River Falls 4
 
Taking the ball and stepping into the circle to begin game two for the Falcons was Maddie Studnicka who went three full innings and allowed just two runs to score while giving up just four hits. Studnicka also added one strikeout and was replaced in the fourth inning by Payton Speckel. Speckel would take the loss on the day as she went the final three innings and gave up the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Speckel allowed three earned runs and four hits while walking one batter and also adding two strikeouts.
 
Maddie Durie earned the win in game two for the Pointers as she went the final two innings and allowed no runs on just five total hits.
 
Katie Uhlenbrauck started off the scoring in the bottom of the first for the Pointers as she singled in Kirsten Perkinson to push the tally to 1-0 Pointers.
 
Perkinson scored again as fellow teammate Uhlenbrauck drove her in again as she doubled to make the games tally 2-0 Pointers.
 
In the top of the fourth inning the Falcons had three runs on three hits and took the lead for the first time in the game at 3-2. Borchardt doubled and advanced to third as Sorensen grounded out to the second baseman. Borchardt was then driven in as Mady Bunnell singled. Hannah Zurn walked and Ali Krohn pinch ran for the catcher Bunnell to put two runners on base for Abby Veloske. Veloske proceeded to double and drove in both runners to push the score to 3-2 at the end of the top of the fourth.
 
The Pointers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Sheahan singled to score Johnson.
 
Shannon Borchardt picked up an RBI to take the lead in the top of the fifth when she drove in Ali Murray who had reached previously on an error by the third baseman. At the end of five innings the score was 4-3 Falcons.
 
The game would stay at the score of 4-3 Falcons until the bottom of the seventh. The bottom of the seventh saw no outs recorded as Payton Mix singled to start the inning and then Bailie Sheahan walked the game off with a two run homerun to push the games final score to 5-4 in favor of the Pointers from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point.
 
The Falcons return to action on Thursday, April 21st when they travel to UW-Stout to take on the Blue Devils who are currently 12-14 overall and 3-5 in the WIAC. First pitch of game one is slated to start at 4 P.M.
