Falcons Suffer First Home Loss of the Season

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -(uwrfsports.com) - UW-River Falls Softball (12-20-1, 3-8-1 WIAC) dropped their first home games of the season as the UW-La Crosse Eagles won both games of the doubleheader by scores of 9-4 and 10-0.

GAME 1: UWRF  4  UW-La Crosse  9
In game one, the scoring began with UW-La Crosse a leadoff walk, and eventually the Eagles knocked in an RBI single to center field to take the first lead 1-0 after the top of the first.

UWRF responded with a four run bottom of the first inning. Abby Veloske started the inning off with a leadoff single to right field, she later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. AlI Murray stepped up next for the Falcons and poked a single to center field that scored  Veloske and the Falcons tied the game 1-1. Hannah Zurn followed with a fielders choice, and then she beat the throw and stole second base. Following the steal by Zurn, Katie Thompson crushed her fourth homerun of the season and gave the Falcons their first lead of the afternoon with the score 3-1. Shannan Borchardt stepped up next and hit her 14th double of the season, Michelle LaCasse then walked with two outs. Maddie Bunnell singled to center field and extended the Falcon lead as she brought in Borchardt making the score 4-1 after the first inning.
UW-La Crosse scored in the top of the second after a triple followed by an overthrow to third base that cut the Falcon lead to 4-2. UW-La Crosse followed up their second inning with a six run third inning. The Eagles scattered four hits and the Falcons committed one error in the inning. The Eagles led 8-4 after the third inning of play.

UW-La Crosse would add one run in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly in foul territory that made the score 9-4. The Falcons were unable to rally in the remaining innings, and dropped their first home game of the season.

LaCasse took the loss for UWRF moving her season record to 7-8 on the season.
 
GAME 2: UWRF  0  UW-La Crosse 10
The Eagles started off the scoring in the second game of the doubleheader with two hits getting two runners home on a single to center field and a runner coming home on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0.

The Falcons were unable to register a hit in the first two innings, and the Eagles capitalized in the top of the third inning. UW-La Crosse scored seven runs, on four hits, and one Falcon error. The highlight of the inning came from Sarah Mueller, who doubled to right field for the Eagles to score the final two runs of the inning which made the score 9-0 after three innings of play.

The Falcons were able to scatter three hits in the game coming from Abby Veloske, Aiyanna Ledwein, and Shannan Borchardt. The Falcons left a total of four runners on base in game two.

Freshman Payton Speckel took the loss in two and two thirds innings of work, putting her season record at 3-5. Maddie Studnicka came in relief and pitched the remaining 2 and one thirds innings.

Next for the UW-River Falls Falcons will be a rescheduled doubleheader against Carleton College (9-23, 3-13 MIAC) on Wednesday April 27 with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m. The Falcons next home game will on Saturday April 30 in a doubleheader against UW-Platteville (4-20, 1-7 WIAC) with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
