River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The UW-River Falls Softball team wrapped up the season with a doubleheader against Hamline University (24-14, 15-7 MIAC). The Falcons dropped both contests by scores of 8-0 and 5-3.
The Falcons finish the season with a 14-22-1 record under first year Head Coach
Amber Dohlman who helped the Falcons finish 6
th in the WIAC, just one place out of the WIAC conference tournament that was changed to five teams this year.
GAME 1: UWRF 0 Hamline 8
In the circle was
Michelle LaCasse, who took the loss for the Falcons.
Maddie Studnicka took over for LaCasse in the top of the first inning, and pitched the remainder of the game.
The Falcons fell behind 4-0 after the first inning, and gave up two more runs in the top of the second off of a two run home run to right field.
UWRF registered two hits in the contest and committed zero errors in the 8-0 loss in a five inning game. LaCasse finished 8-9 on the season.
GAME 2: UWRF 3 Hamline 5
In game two, the Pipers struck first with two runs on three hits off of
Amber Galloway. Galloway gave up three runs in the first two innings, but settled in after that not allowing any runs for the next four innings of work.
The Falcons, down 3-0, were quiet until the fourth inning. Galloway reached on a fielder's choice to start the inning, and scored on a double by senior
Sarah Sorensen in her final game as a Falcon. Up next was
Abby Veloske, another senior, who singled to shortstop which allowed Sorensen to score on the throw to first base. During that same play, Veloske advanced to second after the throw home.
Down 3-2, the Falcons saw
Ali Murray step to the plate and smack an RBI single up the middle to score Veloske. The game was then tied 3-3 after four innings.
After scoreless fifth and sixth innings, the Pipers got a runner on with a single to center field. After registering two outs, the Pipers used a two RBI single off of Galloway to take the lead back, making the score 5-3 headed to the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Falcons ended their season in the bottom of the seventh, and graduate three seniors on the roster including
Abby Veloske,
Hannah Zurn, and
Sarah Sorensen.
This season Veloske finished as the team leader in batting average with .353, on-base percentage of .435, and putouts with 176. Sorensen led the Falcons in walks with 14, and was second on the team in doubles with seven. Zurn this season was third on the team with two homeruns.
