Falcon Soccer Wins First Game of 2016

Winona, Minn. (uwrfsports.com) – UW-River Falls got their first win of the season in dramatic fashion on the road against Saint Mary's on Wednesday night under the lights. Carrie Anderson scored her first goal of the season with a strike in the 94th minute.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • In the first half, the Cardinals outshot the Falcons 7-3, with the Falcons nearly taking the lead in the 8th minute when Kayla Windingstad hit the post.
  • Each team had three shots on goal in the first half, with starting goalie Erica Cimochowski saving three in the first half for the Falcons
  • Saint Mary's had multiple corner kick opportunities in the first half with a total of five to the Falcons two.
  • In the second half, each team had three shots total, neither team getting a goal through to the back of the net. Cimochowski saved one for UWRF and forced the Falcons second overtime game of the year.
  • It took just four minutes into the 10 minute overtime period for Anderson to score the winning goal. She was assisted by junior Abby Soderholm, her team leading fifth point of the season.
  • The Falcons attempted all the shots in the overtime period, three to the Cardinals zero.
  • Cimochowski played the entire game in goal for the Falcons. She gets her first victory of the season for UWRF. She leads the Falcons with 30 saves. The Falcons now have two shutouts this season.  
 
THE OPPOSITION
  • Emily Loof led the Cardinals in shots in the game with five of Saint Mary's 10 total shots.
  • Gabriela Pederson played the entire game in goal, she notched four saves in the game for Saint Mary's.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • UW-River Falls women's soccer will host their homecoming game on Saturday September 24 at 4 p.m. at Ramer Soccer Field. The Falcons host the University of Minnesota Morris. UWRF last faced Morris last year and won by a score of 5-1. All-time, the Falcons lead the series 4-0.
