Last Second Goal Defeats Falcons

River Falls, Wisc. (uwrfsports.com) – A goal with just two seconds left was the deciding factor in the Falcons 2-1 loss to St. Catherine's. In the home opener, UWRF scored the first goal, but gave up two goals in the second half to fall to 0-2 on the season.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Junior midfielder Abby Soderholm scored the first goal on the Falcons new soccer field in the first half of the game in the 15th minute with a swift kick to the right side of the goal. Soderholm's goal was assisted by freshman forward Rachel Windingstad and sophomore forward Maggie Koehler.
  • The Falcons led 1-0 after the first half of play. Senior goalkeeper Erica Cimochowski started in net for the Falcons and registered three saves before freshman Amanda LaDue took over in the second half.
  • In the first half, UWRF and St. Catherine's each had seven shots, the Falcons put two on goal while the Wildcats put three shots on goal.
  • In the second half of play, St. Catherine's put pressure on UWRF. The Wildcats were able to fire 11 shots against the Falcons with four of the shots being on goal. The Falcons offense could not sustain pressure and attempted one shot in the second half of play.
  • St. Catherine's finally tied the game 1-1 in the 67th minute of the game.
  • With time winding down, the Wildcats put on one last offensive attempt and were able to blast a goal into the net with just two seconds remaining by Iryna Talkachova.
  • LaDue corralled two saves in the second half for the Falcons.
THE OPPOSITION
  • St. Catherine's offense sustained pressure in the second half with a total of six corner kicks to go with their 11 shots.
  • Senior midfielder Hannah Okerstrom scored her third goal of the year for the Wildcats in the 67th minute of the game.
  • Sophomore Iryna Talkachova's goal with two seconds to go in the game was her first of the season and her third career goal.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • UW-River Falls will next host the Guties of Gustavus Adolphus College. The Falcons last faced Gustavus in 2015 in a 1-0 win for the Gusties. UWRF bolsters a 1-7 all-time record against Gustavus.
