Falcons Erase 13 Point lead and Defeat Pioneers on Road

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – In the final game of the regular season, the UW-River Falls men's basketball took down the UW-Platteville Pioneers 65-61 in a 13 point comeback on the road.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons did not lead in the second half until 1:46 when Clay Seifert grabbed an offensive rebound and laid in a second chance bucket, and the Falcons escaped with the victory.
  • The Pioneers began the game scoring seven of the first ten points to take an early lead. The Falcons would respond, keeping the game tied at about the halfway point of the first half at 13-13.  
  • Platteville took the first real lead of the game with a 9-1 run to grab a nine point lead with 5:09 remaining in the first half.   
  • UWRF could not close the lead in the final minutes of the first half, with the Pioneers grabbing a 12 point lead at the break.   
  • The 13 point lead was established at 18:17 of the second half, the Falcons would respond with back-to-back three pointers from Devin Buckley and Matt Timlin to bring the score to 44-37 with 16:27 to go.
  • Three straight Falcon field goals came via the three-point shot, with the next four coming from the charity stripe. The Falcons trailed by eight halfway through the second half.
  • The Falcons chipped away at the lead throughout the second half, with back-to-back layups bringing the deficit to just four points with 9:28 to go.
  • Brennan Witt and the Falcon forwards were big in the comeback effort, with free throws and buckets from Witt, Garret Pearson, and Alex Herink bringing the game to a tie with 2:53 remaining.
  • Seifert's go ahead bucket was followed up by a nice lay in by Herink with 1:04 to go, giving the Falcons their largest lead of the game, four points.
  • The Pioneers brought the game to a two point game after two free throws, then a Falcon miss gave the Pioneers a chance. Seifert then dove down for a steal with five seconds remaining, and called a timeout to give UWRF the ball. The Falcons hit their free throws, and escaped with the win.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Herink finished with a team-high 18 points on 5 of 13 shooting, including 6-8 from the free throw line. He also gathered five rebounds.   
  • Witt came off the bench to score 11 for the Falcons. He shot 3-4, and an impressive 5-6 from the free throw line.
  • Seifert and Buckley each finished with seven points, with Seifert snagged two big steals.   
  • From the floor the Falcons were 19-50 (38 percent) and also 8-23 (34.8 percent) from the three point line.   

THE OPPOSITION
  • Robert Duax led the scoring effort for the Pioneers. He shot 4-9 from the field and finished with 16.
  • Cory Vaassen scored 10 points for Platteville as their second leading scorer.   
  • UW-Platteville shot 19-53 (35.8 percent) from the floor. The team made just three shots from beyond the arc, but shot an efficient 20-26 (76.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons will take the first round of the WIAC tournament off before taking on the lowest remaining seed in the second round, which will be played at Karges Center on February 23 at a time to be determined later.
