Men's Hockey Falls to Eau Claire in WIAC Tournament

Eau Claire, WI (uwrfsports.com)- The UW-River Falls men's hockey team traveled to take on the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds in game 2 of the WIAC Playoff Semifinals. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead and got goals from Jeff Bergh, Mike Fazio, and Kyle Gattelaro but in the end they fell to the Blugolds 6-3 and were eliminated from the WIAC tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons came out on fire in the first period and jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Jeff Bergh scored at the 2:25 mark of the period. The goal was Bergh's 1st goal of the season and he was assisted on the goal by Blake Busch and Eddie Matsushima.
  • The Blugolds would tie the game just over 5 minutes later at the 7:59 mark of the period when Garret Clemment found the back of the net.
  • Just over 2 minutes later the Falcons would regain the lead when Mike Fazio found the back of the net with an unassisted goal for his 7th goal of the season. 
  • The Blugolds would answer once again 4 minutes later at the 13:26 mark of the period when Adam Knochenmus scored to tie the game at 2.
  • The first period ended with the game still tied at 2. The Blugolds out shot the Falcons 14-11 in the first period.
  • The Falcons would start the second period in the same fashion as they started the first, jumping out to a quick lead. At 1:19 of the second period the Kyle Gattelaro found the back of the net to put the Falcons up 3-2. The goal was Gattelaro's 3 on the season and he was assisted on the goal by Christian George.
  • The Blugolds would once again answer just over 4 minutes later when Patrick Moore found the back of the net to tie the game at 3.
  • The Blugolds would take their first lead of the night less than a minute later at the 6:20 mark of the period when Bryan Sinz scored to put the Blugolds up 4-3.
  • At the 10:06 mark of the period the first penalties of the game were called when Eddie Matsushima and Adam Knochenmus both were called for unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Less than a minute later Bryan Sinz was called for tripping and the Falcons headed to the power play.
  • The Falcons couldn't get anything going on the power play and the Blugolds held on to their 4-3 lead.
  • The second period ended with the Blugolds out shooting the Falcons 10-9 in the period.
  • The Falcons came out on fire again to start the third period, peppering the Eau Claire netminder with 7 shots in the first 2:20 of the period, but could not tie the game at 4.
  • The Falcons continued to pressure throughout the first part of the period when at 9:46 mark of the period Alex Strand gave the Blugolds a 2 goal lead at 5-3.
  • At the 13:29 mark of the period Mike Dietrich was called for slashing and put the Blugolds on the power play. The Falcons killed off the Blugold power play and then went on one of their own at the 15:52 mark of the period when Adam Leven was called for high sticking.
  • The Falcons sustained great pressure and generated multiple scoring chances on the power play including a shot that hit the pipe by Jeff Bergh.
  • The Falcons pulled thier goalie at teh 17:10 mark of the period in hopes of using the extra attacker to climb one goal closer, but the Blugolds added an empty net goal at the 19:16 mark to make the final score 6-3.
  • The Falcons out shot the Blugolds 19-6 in the third period and 40 to 31 for the game.
  • Zach Quinn made 25 saves in net for the Falcons.
THE OPPOSITION
  • Jay Deo made 37 saves in net for the Blugolds to get the win.
  • Garret Clemment led the way for the Blugolds with 2 goals and 1 assist.
SEASON WRAP UP
  • The Falcons end the season with a 12-13-2 record with a WIAC record of 3-4-1.
  • The Falcons will graduate 10 seniors off this season's team.
