Men's Basketball Bounces Back with Explosive Win

Menomonie, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team rebounded from their first WIAC loss with a dominating performance against UW-Stout getting the win by a score of 92-51, with 60 points coming in the second half.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The defining moment of the game came at the start of the second half with the Falcons separating themselves from the Blue Devils with a 16-0 run across the first five minutes.  
  • The game began with each team trading buckets, with the lead changing nine times in the first eight minutes.
  • The largest lead in the first 10 minutes of the game was just four points, and the Falcons largest lead just being three.
  • UWRF finally broke that trend scoring seven straight points capped off by a Devin Buckley layup to lead by six points with 7:40 to go in the first half.
  • The Blue Devils were unable to take back the lead after that point. The Falcons would head into the locker room up 32-23, and had at one point held a 10 point lead.
  • The 16 unanswered points for UWRF were led by Alex Herink who scored nine of those points.
  • When the dust settled, the Falcons led by 26 points with 15:21 to go in the game.
  • The remainder of the game did not get much easier for the Blue Devils. The Falcons had runs of 8-0 and 11-0 in the second half. The lead was as large as 44 points during the second half.            
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • All 16 healthy players played for the men's basketball team. 14 of those 16 players scored in the game against the Blue Devils with Alex Herink leading the way with 17 points on 6-11 shooting.
  • Devin Buckley and Booker Coplin were the other Falcons in double-figures. Buckley shot 5-8 from the floor while Coplin finished 4-7 including a pair of three pointers.
  • Four other Falcons scored at least seven points in the game. Clay Seifert and Brennan Witt scored eight points each. Seifert added four assists. Grant Erickson and Garret Pearson each scored seven on a combined 6-9.
  • In the 40 minutes of action the Falcons shot 34-64 (53.1 percent) from the floor. UWRF nailed nine shots from beyond the three point line.
  • From the free throw line the Falcons shot 15-17 (88.2 percent) and had 42 of their points come from the bench.  
  • On the glass the Falcons held a 45-28 advantage, 14 of those rebounds for UWRF were offensive. River Falls score 20 of their points off of 13 Stout turnovers.    

THE OPPOSITION
  • UW-Stout had just one player in double-figures. John Lahti scored 11 points on 5-11 shooting.  
  • Leading scorer John Keefe scored just nine points while struggling from the floor going 3-13, but dished out four assists in the contest.
  • From the floor the Blue Devils shot 19-58 (32.8 percent) and connected on five of the 16 attempts from beyond the arc. From the free throw line, UW-Stout shot 8-14 (57.1 percent).    
 
LOOKING AHEAD
UW-River Falls will return home for the final time in the 2016-17 regular season with UW-Whitewater (18-3, 7-3 WIAC) as their opponent. The Warhawks enter Karges Center on February 11 at 5 p.m. Last time these two teams faced, the Falcons came out victorious 90-74. The loss on January 11 was the Warhawks last loss, they are currently on an eight-game winning streak.
