Falcons Split Opening Games of Spring Break Trip

Leesburg, Fla. (uwrfsports.com) – In their first games of their spring break trip, the UW-River Falls softball team split their two games against Concordia-Wisconsin and Lake Forest College by scores of 4-1 and 7-0, respectively.

THE RUNDOWN: GAME 1
Final Score: UW-River Falls: 4, Concordia-Wisconsin 1
Location: Leesburg, Florida
Record: UWRF: 1-4, Concordia-Wisconsin 5-2

WHAT HAPPENED
  • In an impressive win, the Falcons took down Concordia who has defeated two WIAC teams already this year. Ali Krohn smacked the game-winning single in the bottom of the fourth inning as Payton Speckel obtained the complete game win.
  • Scoring started in the bottom of the first with UWRF drawing first blood via a Mady Bunnell single to right field. She brought home Shannan Borchardt.
  • Speckel kept Concordia in check for the first three innings allowing just one hit in the first two innings, but Concordia led with a double in the top of the third, which eventually led to Concordia knotting the game at one.
  • UWRF kept the pressure on in their next two frames, with two hits in the third, but the runners couldn't reach home until the bottom of the fourth when Krohn brought home Amber Galloway with two outs and one on. UW-River Falls added another run in the frame on an error to lead 3-1.
  • Concordia advanced runners to second in each of the next two innings, but the UWRF defense kept Concordia in check and held their 3-1 lead.
  • UW-River Falls added a insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ali Murray reached on an error and advanced to second to get it started. Krohn came up clutch again sending Murray home and giving UWRF a 4-1 lead.
  • Speckel finished the game in the top of the seventh by forcing three fly balls, thus earning the Falcons first victory of the young season.

  • Maddie Studnicka would start the game in the circle for UWRF. Maria Zepeda of Lake Forest took her deep in the first at bat. Then Alyssa Grimm hit another home run to start the second to go up 2-0. Studnicka would then be replaced by Speckel.
