Slow Start Leads to Falcons Loss in NCAA Tournament

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – In the round of 32 of the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament, the UW-River Falls could not overcome a large first half deficit, and were defeated by the Warburg Knights 76-43, thus ending their season.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Knights scored the first 12 points of the game, and would not trail in the game. The Falcons scored just 14 points in the first half, their lowest point total in a half this season and eventually fell to the red hot Knights of Wartburg.
  • Warburg made five of their first eight shots to sprint out to a 12 point lead. The Falcons got their first score from Alex Herink at 15:15 on a layup.
  • Warburg then used a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes to open up a 29-4 run with 8:14 to go in the half.
  • UWRF would score just 13 more points the rest of the half, and trail 44-17 at the halftime break.
  • Wartburg shot an astounding 16-27 (59.2 percent) from the floor and made six 3-pointers. They also shot 6-6 from the free throw line.
  • The Falcons opened up the second half scoring the first eight points and brought the score to 44-25 with 16:19 to go in the game.
  • Wartburg then took back control with an 8-1 run over the next four minutes. Austin Moldenhauer hit back-to-back threes to bring the game to 52-32 with 9:35 to go.     
  • Wartburg's offense kept coming in bunches as the Knights scored the next seven points to bring the lead back to 27.
  • The rest of the way the Knights extended their lead to as much as 36 points, and held the Falcons to 26 second half points.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Devin Buckley was the Falcon scoring leader with eight points. He made a pair of three pointers, and also had two rebounds and a steal.
  • Brennan Witt was the leading scorer off the bench with seven points. He shot 5-8 from the free throw line and collected five rebounds.
  • Moldenhauer and Chirs Laymon each had a pair of threes to each finish with six points on 4-8 combined shooting from outside the arc.
  • Struggling from the floor, UWRF finished 12-53 (22.6 percent) and made 6-37 (16.2 percent) from the three point line. The Falcons also shot 13-23 (56.5 percent) from the free throw line.         

THE OPPOSITION
  • Three Knights reached double figures in the game. Nate Woeste was the leader with 19 points.      
  • Jordan Cannon scored 16 points and also had seven rebounds and three assists. Nick Webber was the final Knight in double figures with 12 points on 4-8 shooting.
  • Wartburg as a team shot 24-46 (52.2 percent) and 9-23 (39.1 percent) from the three point line. As a team they shot 19-23 (82.6 percent) from the free throw line.        
LOOKING FORWARD
With the loss, the Falcons season has ended. Next season the Falcons men's and women's basketball teams will move out to Don Page Arena, and R.A. Karges Center will no longer be used for baketball games.
