Volleyball Goes Undefeated On The Weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls volleyball team went 4-0 this past weekend picking up four more nonconference wins at the Macalester Invitational.  The Falcons are off to a hot start winning their last nine games in a row and improving to 9-1 on the season. 
 
THE RUNDOWN AGAINST ST. CATHERINE
Final Score: UWRF 3, St. Catherine 1
Location: St. Paul, Minn.
Records: UWRF 6-1 (0-0 WIAC), St. Catherine 3-3 (0-0 UMAC)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ST. CATHERINE
  • The Falcons won the match 3-1.  The Wildcats put pressure on the Falcons in the first two sets taking the Falcons to a 25-23 win in set one and then a 20-25 loss in set two.  However, the Falcons took charge of things in set three and four winning 25-17 and 25-19. 
  • As a team the he Falcons outhit the Wildcats .193 (49-21-145) to .132 (45-24-159).
  • Serving was a strength for the Falcons out serving the Wildcats 10-2 in service aces.
  • Three Falcons had double digit kills; Amara Meyer with 15, Dakotah Poitra with 11, and Karli Nielsen with 11. 
  • Poitra had a double double in the match also recording 13 digs. 
  • Hannah Robb had 32 digs.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons went 3-1 against the Scots winning the last three (25-11, 25-19, 25-18) after dropping the first set (24-26).
  • As a team the Falcons outhit the Scots .140 (53-27-186) to .114 (45-25-176). 
  • Amara Meyer and Karli Nielsen led the offense each putting up double digit kills.  Meyer had 18 total kills and hit .271 and Nielsen had 12 kills and had a team high .276 hitting percentage. 
  • Mallory Griffin and Hailey Huseth shared the setting duties having 24 and 20 assists respectively. 
  • On the defense, five Falcons saw double digit digs.  Hannah Robb led the way with 27.  Hannah Striggow had 16 digs, Dakotah Poitra had 14, Mallory Griffin had 13 and Hailey Huseth had 10 total digs. 
  • At the net, Nielsen had six blocks, and Meyer and Savannah Brauer each had five.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons won the match in four sets 25-21, 15-25, 25-23, and 25-17.
  • The Falcons led in every category against the Yellowjackets outscoring them 71-49, out hitting them .166 (61-32-175) to .141 (42-19-163), and out digging them 86-70.
  • Amara Meyer and Karli Nielsen continued to lead the Falcon offense having 16 and 10 total kills. 
  • Hannah Robb carried the defense with 31 total digs.  Dakotah Poitra and Hailey Huseth each had 14 digs. 
 
THE RUNDOWN AGAINST LINFIELD
Final Score: UWRF 3, Linfield 1

Records: UWRF 9-1 (0-0 WIAC), Linfield 6-1 (0-0 NWC)
 
WHAT HAPPENED
  • In their toughest matchup of the weekend, the Falcons went to five sets for the first time this season giving Linfield their first loss in 2017.
  • All five sets where close sets with the Falcons coming ahead 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12.
  • It was the front row defense for the Falcons that kept them in the game.  Amara Meyer and Karli Nielsen combined for 16 blocks.  The team had a total of 32 blocks in the match.
  • Libero Hannah Robb had 30 digs and Dakotah Poitra had 22. 
  • Meyer and Nielsen teamed up again to lead the Falcons to a .142 hitting percentage.  Meyer had 19 kills and hit .390.  Nielsen hit a game high .400 and had 10 kills. 
  • The Falcons combined for 10 service aces.
  • Hailey Huseth led the offense with 26 assists.
 

LOOKING AHEAD
  • The Falcons host Carleton College Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in their new home Page Arena located in the newly built Falcon Center.  The two teams met already once this season at the St. Olaf Invitational.  The Knights are the only team this season to get a win over the Falcons
