Men's Basketball Give Pioneers First WIAC Loss

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – A strong showing at the free throw line, gave the UW-River Falls men's basketball team a 91-84 WIAC conference win over UW-Platteville.  The Falcons scored 36 points from the charity stripe Wednesday night at Page Arena.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Pioneers took an early lead in the first half going up five points in the first four minutes. 
  • For the next four minutes the two teams traded control of the lead with seven changes happening in the short amount of time. 
  • The Pioneers changed things up going on a 9-2 run and maintaining a lead until 6:09 when the Falcons tied it up 30-30 on a jumper by Matt Keller
  • The Pioneers controlled the remainder of the half scoring 17 points in the last five minutes giving them a 47-35 advantage at the halftime break. 
  • In the second half, the Falcons quickly chipped away at the Pioneers twelve point lead tying it up 54-54 with 13:06 remaining in the game. 
  • The Falcons never looked back after that point as they carried the lead till the end winning by seven points. 
  • The last 15 points scored by the Falcons all came from the free throw line. 

IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Four Falcons found themselves with double digit points on the evening.  Alex Herink had 24 on 6-10 shooting.  He was 12-13 from the charity stripe and added seven rebounds.
  • Devin Buckley was a perfect 6-6 from the line and scored 21 total points on the night.  He was 6-8 from the floor and connected on three three-point shots.
  • Austin Heidecker came off the bench for 15 points.  He shot 6-11 from the floor and was 3-4 from the line. 
  • Defensively Clay Seifert had eight rebounds and two steals.  He also aided on the offense with 14 points.  He was 3-5 from the floor and 8-9 from the line. 
  • From the floor, UWRF shot 25-54 (46.3 percent) and were 36-42 from the charity stripe.   

THE OPPOSITION
  • Robert Duax was the leading scorer of the night with 29 points.  He was 8-11 from the floor making three of his four shots beyond the arc.  At the line,  he was 10-13 and added two rebounds. 
  • Jake Schowalter was 5-9 from the floor for 13 points. 
  • Quentin Schields came off the bench for 11 points on 4-8 shooting and 2-3 from the charity stripe. 
  • The Pioneers shot 30-57 (52.6 percent) from the field and 15-24 (62.5 percent) at the line.  They connected on nine shots beyond the arc. 
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons improve to 11-2 on the season and 2-1 in WIAC play.  They travel to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday afternoon to take on the Titans in a matchup that is set for 5 p.m.
