Women's Hockey Gets Big Win on Senior Night

River Falls, Wis.  (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls women's hockey team hosted conference rival UW-Superior in a battle for first place in the WIAC at Hunt Arena Friday night. The Falcons honored their three seniors Carly Moran, Amy Auran, and Angie Hall before the game. The defenseman supplied some offensive firepower for the Falcons as Haley Nielsen and Erica Schramel each scored two goals to lead the Falcons to a 7-5 victory over UW-Superior.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST UW-SUPERIOR
  • The goals came fast in this contest as the Falcons struck early as Haley Nielsen took a pass out of the corner, skated in a bit, and fired one past Sky Brown for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets were then assessed a penalty, and UW-River Falls went on the Power Play. Haley Nielsen would strike again, from nearly the exact same spot on the ice for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Falcon offense didn't let up as Madi Nolan redirected a great pass from Jessica Bird, as her shot went five-hole on Brown for a UW-River Falls 3-0.
  • The momentum was all in the Falcons favor until the Yellow Jackets were awarded a Power Play. On that Power Play Saige Patrick would score to draw UW-Superior to within 3-1.
  • Kaleigh Martinson would then pull the Yellow Jackets to within a goal at 3-2 just over three-and-a-half minutes later with her 16th of the season.
  • The second period saw even more offense as UW-Superior tied the game 41 seconds in as Saige Patrick scored her second Power Play goal of the game.
  • UW-River Falls did noy allow the score to remain tied for long as Payton Rudiger scored her 3rd of the season at the 2:02 mark to put the Falcons back out front 4-3.
  • Not to be outdone Jenna Curtis for the Yellow Jackets tied it up at 4-4 just 1:46 later on the Power Play.
  • The Falcons would regain the lead as Maddy Illikainen would score her 5th of the season when she put home a rebound off of a Kora Torkelson shot.
  • UW-Superior would not go away as Kelly Cockrell would tie the score at 5-5.
  • Erica Schramel would regain the lead for the Falcons as she scored her 3rd goal of the season, when she took the puck just inside the Yellow Jackets blue line, skated past two defenders, and wristed a shot by Sky Brown glove side for a 6-5 lead.
  • Less than a minute later the Falcons were on the Power Play. Erica Schramel took a pass from Callie Hoff, moved into the high slot, and ripped one past Brown for her 2nd of the game.  It gave the Falcons a 7-5 lead, and ended the scoring for the night.
  • Tatyana Delaittre took over in net for the Falcons in the second period and made 18 saves the rest of the way to shutout the Yellow Jackets in the third period.
  • Erica Schramel in addition to her 2 goals had 2 assists.
  • Callie Hoff and Kora Torkelson each had 2 assists.
  • UW-River Falls was 2 of 6 on the Power Play
 
THE OPPOSITION
  • Kaleigh Martinson had a goal and 2 assists.
  • Mikayla Goodin had 2 assists.
  • Saige Patrick had 2 goals in the game, but also had 4 penalties.
  • Sky Brown made 29 saves for the Yellow Jackets.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The UW-River Falls women's hockey team returns to the ice tomorrow afternoon as they travel to UW-Superior for the second game of the home-and-home. The puck drops at 2pm.
