RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons held on to their 11-point fourth quarter lead to defeat Carleton College 67-64 on Tuesday night in Northfield, Minn. A jumper from
Brianna Leahy put UW-River Falls up 58-47 with under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Knights would close the gap to within two points at 66-64 with under a minute left in the game. Anna Jensen missed a shot to tie the game with 12 seconds remaining, and the Knights fouled four times in a row to send Leahy to the line with three seconds remaining. Leahy made her first free throw and missed her second, and the Knights were unable to get a final shot off before the buzzer.
Leahy had 12 points on 4-8 shooting and filled the stat sheet with 2 blocks, 2 steals, 3 assists and 5 rebounds.
Taylor Paulsrud led the way in scoring for UWRF with 13 points, including shooting 3-4 on three pointers.
Crystal Pearson was also in double figures with 11 points and 4 rebounds.
The Falcons shot their best in the third quarter when they outscored the Knights 24-18 and built up an 8-point lead. They shot 47 percent from the field and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line in the third quarter, which was significantly higher than their 37 percent overall shooting and 74 percent on free throws. The Knights had a tougher time shooting the ball, only finishing 35 percent overall and 25 percent from beyond the arc. The UWRF bench also outscored the Knights 23-10.
Carleton was led by Cece Leone with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Erica Ellefson had 16 points and 3 steals on 6-11 shooting. The Knights held a narrow edge in points in the paint, points off turnovers and second chance points.
The Falcons are now 2-1 after the win over Carleton. They will continue their run of MIAC teams when they host St. Olaf on Friday and St. Kate's on Saturday for the UWRF Invitational at Page Arena. Tip-off against St. Olaf is set for 7:30 p.m.
