RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls women's hockey team continued their dominating ways defeating St. Olaf 7-2 in a nonconference matchup Tuesday night at Hunt Arena.
St. Olaf struck first at the 6:09 mark of the first period as senior Xandi Swedberg scored on an assist from Kalli McCullen. Oles up 1-0. The Falcons managed to kill of consecutive penalties at 7:16 and 9:30 to keep the score 1-0. The Falcons responded at the 13:26 mark on a
Callie Hoff goal, assisted by
Jamie Bird.
River Falls started the second period out hot, scoring at 0:33 on a goal by
Haley Nielsen, assisted by
Callie Hoff. The Falcon's killed their third penalty of the game after
Abigail Stow was called for tripping at 2:07. At that point, St. Olaf was 0 for 3 on power plays.
Haley Nielsen scored an unassisted goal at 6:37 to put the Falcons up 3-1. It was Nielsen's second goal of the game. The Falcon's scored their third goal of the period on a score by freshman
Reilly Springman, assisted by
Alyson Niebur.
At the 9:18 mark, St. Olaf subbed out senior goalie Mae Morris in favor of sophomore Kaitlyn Pellicci. After a St Olaf interference penalty, the Falcons scored their first power play goal of the evening on a shot from
Alyson Niebur, assisted by
Kiana Gilbraith and
Abigail Stow. Score at the end of the second period was River Falls 5, St. Olaf 1.
St. Olaf began the third period with another goalie switch, subbing out Kaitlyn Pellicci in favor of freshman Grace Boswell-Healey. The Falcons scored quickly at 2:02 on a goal by
Sam Young, assisted by
Izzy Brosseau.
Jessica Bird of the Falcons was called for hooking at 3:49, but River Falls managed to hold of St Olaf's power play.
River Falls managed to kill off another hooking penalty on
Bella Wagner, but St. Olaf quickly came back for the second goal of the evening on an unassisted score by freshman Makenzie Booth. The Falcons got another power play opportunity at 10:18 after a checking penalty on St Olaf, but were unable to capitalize. Freshman
Reilly Springman scored the Falcon's 7
th and final goal of the evening at 18:03. She was assisted by
Ashley Effertz.
This was the third game this season in which the Falcons scored 7 or more goals. St. Olaf struggled on the power play conversion. They were 0 for 6 on power play opportunities. The Falcons had 58 shots on goal, while the Oles finished with just 18.
The Falcons now 7-1 on the season will take on UW-Superior in a 2:05 pm home matchup on December 1
st.
