RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons used a dominant first half to cruise to a 75-55 win over UW-Superior on Wednesday night.
Austin Heidecker led the Falcons with 18 points and 20 rebounds, including six offensive boards.
Matt Keller was the leading scorer with 19 points and a team-high 4 assists on 4-8 shooting on three pointers.
Julian Jackson was also close to posting a double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds.
The Yellowjackets were competitive early and only trailed 13-9 after five minutes of play. UW-River Falls used a 15-5 run over the next nine minutes to build a 14-point lead at 28-14. Keller hit a three pointer and Heidecker made consecutive layups to build the lead to 19 prior to UW-Superior's Thomas Robarge hitting a three pointer before the half ended. UWRF took a 39-23 lead into the locker room after shooting 50 percent from the field and 8-11 from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets were held to 33 percent shooting and didn't attempt a free throw in the first half.
UW-Superior narrowed the gap to 51-42 after Lucas Lamue hit a shot from beyond the arc with 11 minutes remaining, but the gap would soon rise to double digits for the rest of the game. Keller's 14 second-half points were key to extending the Falcons' lead, and two free throws from
Nathan Macho, Jr. gave them their biggest lead of the game by 26 with only two minutes remaining.
Macho, Jr. had 10 points on 4-6 shooting and a game-high 3 steals, which was more than the entire Yellowjackets roster. The Falcons dominated the turnover battle by committing only seven while UW-Superior recorded 15. Montroy Scott was the only player in double figures for the Yellowjackets with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Falcons are now 3-1 after their win over the Yellowjackets. They will host their first game of the year at Don Page Arena when they take on Northwestern (Minn.) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
