RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons ended a four-game losing streak with a tight 64-62 road win over Luther College on Saturday afternoon.
Taylor Paulsrud led UW-River Falls with 21 points on over 50 percent shooting to go along with six rebounds and four blocks. UWRF erased a five-point halftime deficit by outscoring Luther 20-11 in the third quarter and managing to hold onto their lead for the remainder of the game, even as it was cut to two points on multiple occasions.
Brianna Leahy was crucial off the bench with nine points and 11 rebounds. She also added three blocks as the Falcons held a 9-0 advantage on blocks over the Norse.
Luther found themselves up six points within the opening minute, and UWRF trailed by as much as 17-6 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Falcons began the second quarter on a 8-0 run within a minute that was capped off by a
Tessa Hubbard three-pointer to give them their first lead of the game at 21-20. Hubbard also hit a shot from beyond the arc in the closing seconds of the first half to keep the Falcons within striking distance before they opened up the scoring in the third quarter. The teams battled back-and-forth in the fourth quarter before Leahy hit a clutch three-pointer with only 1:22 remaing to put UWRF up five points. Laura Hamilton made two free throws in the final five seconds to bring the game within two points, but the Falcons held on for a 64-62 win.
Hamilton led Luther with 19 points and a game-high eight steals. The Norse had a 15-4 advantage on steals, but they shot only 3-23 from beyond the arc. UWRF had nine players score and had 25 of their points come from their bench.
The Falcons are now 4-5 after the win and will take on Emmaus College in Dubuque, Iowa, next Saturday at 3 p.m.
