Women's Hockey Clinches Regular Season WIAC TItle

River Falls, Wis.  (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls women's hockey team played UW-Eau Claire at Hunt Arena this afternoon. Maddy Illikainen and Carly Moran scored for the Falcons giving them a 1 goal lead on two different occasions, but the Blugolds were able to answer and tie it each time, sending the game into overtime. Angie Hall was made some big saves late in the 3rd period and overtime to preserve the 2-2 tie. With the Tie, the Falcons have clinched the WIAC regular season Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST UW-EAU CLAIRE
  • The Falcons would strike first as Maddy Illikainen would get a pass from Sam Young, and go in alone on Erin Connolly and find the back of the net. for her 6th goal of the season.
  • UW-Eau Claire tied the score at 1-1 when Lauren Norgren's dump in took a funny hop off the backboards, and ended up in the feet of Angie Hall. Lexi Wilson skated in, and knocked it into the net.
  • The Falcons out shot the Blugolds 10-3 in the period.
  • Half-way through the 2nd period Carly Moran scored her 23rd of the season on a wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle that went bar down to the back of the net to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
  • Shots for the period were even as both squads got 9 shots on goal.
  • UW-Eau Claire was awarded a Power Play with just over 14 minutes to go in the game, and it didn't take them long to convert as Holly Turnbull scored from the point to tie the game at 2-2.
  • The Falcons went on the Power Play with 7:13 left to go in the game, but were unable to convert.
  • Another Power Play was given to the Falcons with just 1:12 to go, but were unable to convert before regulation ended.
  • In the overtime, the Falcons started with an abbreviated power play and generated a few scoring chances early. The Blugolds answered as the action went from end to end in a tense overtime session.
  • In the end, neither team could score in the overtime period as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
  • Angie Hall made several big saves for UW-River Falls to keep the score at 2-2. Hall finished with 23 saves in net.
 THE OPPOSITION
  • Erin Connolly finished with 26 saves.
  • Lexi Wilson and Holly Turnbull scored for the Blugolds.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The UW-River Falls women's hockey team wraps up their regular season schedule on the road next Saturday Feb. 17th, against UW-Eau Claire.  The puck drops at 2:00 PM.
