Falcons Earn Another Split in Florida

Clermont, Fla. (uwrfsports.com) –  The UW-River Falls softball team played two games on Friday in Clermont, Florida. The Falcons dropped the first game to Lake Forest 18-4, but rebounded in their second game to win a tight battle 2-1 over Transylvania. Payton Speckel picked up her 6th win on the season and Maddie Studnicka registered her 3 save of the year.

WHAT HAPPENED AGAINST LAKE FOREST
  • After Lake Forest took an early 1-0 lead in their half of the first inning, but the Falcons answered in the home half of the first with a 2-run homer by Noelle Senour to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
  • Lake Forest answered in the top of the 2nd, with a 5-run inning highlighted by a 3-run homer, to take a 6-2 lead.
  • The Foresters added 3 more runs in the top of the 4th to push their lead to 9-2. 
  • Aiyana Ledwein and Molly Kaspar singled in runs in the Falcon half of the 4th to cut the Forester lead to 9-4.
  • The Foresters exploded for a 9 run top of the 5th inning to put the game out of reach at 18-4.

WHAT HAPPENED AGAINST TRANSYLVANIA
  • Transylvania got on the board first, to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • Senour lead off the 2nd inning with a single to center. Amber Galloway came up two batters later and hit a single to left, Senour came all the way around to score from first after an error on the left fielder to tie the game at 1. Erin Ralph stepped in next and singled home Galloway to give the Falcons a 2-1 after 2 innings. 
  • The Falcons played great defense and pitched well the rest of the way to preserve the 2-1 victory. 
  • Payton Speckel threw 5 and 1/3 innings giving up just 1 run on 4 hits. She struck out 4 and did not allow a runner past first base after the first inning until she was relieved by Maddie Studnicka in the 6th inning.
  • Studnicka came in and shut the door on Transylvania to pick up her 3rd save of the season.  
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons play their last 2 games on Saturday before heading back to River Falls. Their first game is against St. Lawrence University at 2pm. Their second game is against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 7pm.
