Women's Soccer Dominates in Season Opener

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons got their season off to a strong start in Superior on Friday afternoon, defeating the UW-Superior Yellowjackets 3-0.

Junior forward Maggie Koehler scored the first goal for the Falcons in the 25th minute on a header that was crossed from freshman Kassidy Mackie to make it 1-0. Amanda LaDue started in goal for UWRF, recording two saves in 45 minutes of action.

UWRF was on the attack early, taking four shots in the first ten minutes before LaDue faced her first shot. The Falcons were the more aggressive team in the first half by taking 16 shots compared to Superior's five shots, with junior Peri Hoff also picking up a yellow card in the 21st minute. However, the score remained 1-0 going into halftime.

The second half saw junior goalie Haley Crosby put on the gloves for UWRF, but she failed to see much action in the final 45 minutes. Crosby only faced one shot in the entire second half as the Falcons fired 13 shots at the Yellowjackets. Rachel Windingstad scored her first goal since her ACL injury a year ago in the 75th minute, which was quickly followed by a header from Jadelyn Hunn to make the score 3-0.

UWRF outshot UW-Superior 29-6 overall and 13-3 for shots on target. Rachel Windingstad, Lindsey Jack and Peri Hoff all had two shots on target, with 13 Falcon players registering shots. UW-Superior was forced to make 10 saves, while LaDue and Crosby only faced a combined three. The Falcons also dominated the battle for corners, taking 12 and conceding none.

Madison Gutekunst allowed all three goals for the Yellowjackets, while goalie Linnea Bollum made four saves and allowed no goals in her 45 minutes of action. Sarah Fjeran had the most shots on goal for the Yellowjackets with two.

UW-River Falls has now won all 24 meetings against UW-Superior and won their season opener for the second straight year. The Falcons will next host Wartburg at 2 p.m. on Saturday, who they are 0-3 against all-time.
