Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener 5-1

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons fell to the Wartburg Knights 5-1 in their home opener on Saturday afternoon. UWRF had the majority of possession to start the game, taking the first four shots and only conceding one shot in the first 15 minutes. Wartburg responded by Nicole Adair scoring her first goal of the year off of a header from Alyssa Drewelow's corner in the 17th minute, followed by a goal from Anna Rood into the top left corner of the goal from the top of the box to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute.

The fast pace continued for the rest of the half, with both teams trading shots until Wartburg's Morgan Finch set up a shot for Kate Leurs that found the back of the net in the 39th minute. It looked like the score would stay 3-0 as they entered halftime, but Leurs scored her second goal of the day with less than 20 seconds left in the half to leave the Falcons trailing 4-0 at the break.

The Falcons were only outshot 12-9 in the first half, but the Knights found more quality shots by attempting eight shots on goal to UWRF's two shots. Emma Strong made two saves in goal for Wartburg, while Haley Crosby had four first-half saves for UWRF.

The Knights continued to press the Falcons in the opening minutes of the second half, which paid off in the 57th minute when Molly Close netted a shot from about 25 yards away that sailed over Crosby's head into the goal to give the Knights a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Camryn Altnau provided one of the few highlights for the Falcons on Saturday when she took a pass from Callie Mccauley and slipped it into the bottom right corner to cut the deficit to 5-1 in the 79th minute.

Wartburg outshot the Falcons 21-13 and 11-4 for shots on goal. Emma Strong got the win in goal for the Knights, saving two shots and facing 10 shots before Hayley Kroghe took over in goal for the final half hour. Haley Crosby made six saves in goal for UWRF and played all 90 minutes.

The Falcons host their next game at Ramer Field on September 4 when they face the University of Northwestern (St. Paul) at 4 p.m.
