Soccer Ties Northwestern on Rainy Afternoon

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons scored two goals in the opening 40 minutes but couldn't hold on for the win against the University of Northwestern on Tuesday afternoon. The soaked conditions from steady downpour didn't slow down UW-River Falls in the first half, as Kari Rollo pushed the ball down the left wing in the 21st minute before crossing the ball to Camryn Altnau for a wide-open chip-in goal. It was Altnau's second goal in her last two games and gave UWRF a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Mariah Troje scored her first goal of the season in the 37th minute on a shot into the bottom left corner that beat Northwestern's goalie Samantha Colombo to make it 2-0. The Falcons had plenty of opportunities in the opening 40 minutes, sending multiple through passes beyond the Eagles defense that weren't able to find their target.

Danielle Roberts cut into the Falcons' lead in the 42nd minute when she kicked in a rebound off of a mishandled ball from goalkeeper Haley Crosby to make it 2-1. The Falcons outshot the Eagles 10-8 in the first half and committed five fouls to Northwestern's zero. Emily Currie scored her first goal of the year in the 55th minute when Crobsy saved a shot from Emily Daubenmeir that dropped right at Currie's feet before she buried it into the back of the net. Rollo had a shot that hit the crossbar and Troje had one that hit the post, but the team's couldn't separate from each other and remained tied 2-2 at the end of the second half. UWRF took 10 more shots than Northwestern in regulation, but the teams were equal on shots on target.

Altnau had a shot that hit the crossbar in the opening minutes of overtime, but Northwestern had the best chances and outshot the Falcons 7-3 in extra time. The game remained knotted up at two after the second overtime, leading to a draw in difficult conditions.

Colombo was only listed at 4 feet 11 inches tall, but she stood tall in goal all afternoon for Northwestern, facing 27 shots and recording nine saves. Crosby had 11 saves in the game, including crucial diving saves in the closing minutes of overtime. Altnau and Troje each had three shots on goal for the Falcons, while Currie had a game-high five shots on goal for the Eagles.

The Falcons move to 1-1-1 after their draw against Northwestern. They will be back in action tomorrow at home against Martin Luther College at 4:30 p.m.
