RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons couldn't keep their undefeated streak on the road alive on Wednesday, falling to St. Mary's University 2-1.
Alayna Westerman provided a late goal to try to send the game to overtime, but the Cardinals' Mary Loy scored within one minute of Westerman to drop the Falcons to 5-2-1 on the season.
The first half was scoreless as both teams fired five shots and each committed five fouls.
Amanda LaDue got her fourth start of the season for UW-River Falls, saving both shots fired her way in the opening 45 minutes. St. Mary's goalie Gabriella Pederson saved two shots from Perri Hoff and one from
Kari Rollo in a six-minute span for her three first-half saves.
St. Mary's would get on the board first when Maura Michener took a pass from Dara Kaiser to go up 1-0 in the 65th minute. Michener's fifth goal of the season was followed by a number of substitutions from both teams, each earning corner kicks and having chances to score in the following 15 minutes.
Mariah Troje picked up her first yellow card of the season in the 81st minute, and Westerman came on for
Michelle Weinberg only three minutes before Westerman scored her second goal of the season off of a
Maggie Koehler assist. Koehler leads the team with four assists this year. Loy put the ball past LaDue only 30 seconds later, and UWRF wasn't able to take a shot in the last five minutes before falling 2-1 to the Cardinals.Â
The matchup looked incredibly even on paper, with the Falcons taking 12 shots with six on goal, while the Cardinals took 11 shots with six being on target. LaDue and Pederson each only made two saves in the second half, and the teams committed a large number of fouls with nine going on UWRF and 11 fouls on St. Mary's.
Lindsey Jack led the Falcons with four shots.
UWRF will travel to Concordia College at 3 p.m. on Sunday to take on the Cobbers. The Falcons are 3-3 all-time against Concordia-Moorhead. Â
