RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - UW-River Falls scored two goals in the final six minutes to stun UW-Stout 4-3 on the road in Menomonie, Wis., on Wednesday night.
Maggie Koehler scored her fourth goal of the year to tie the game at 3-3 off of a rebound in the 85th minute, and
Kari Rollo put a shot into the top right corner on a pass from Koehler in the 88th minute to win the game. The goal was Rollo's third game-winning goal of the year and Koehler's sixth assist.
The Falcons were on the board after their first shot of the game when
Camryn Altnau scored in the 11th minute to put the visitors up 1-0 in their WIAC opener. Altnau's 10th goal of the season was quickly leveled by a goal from the Blue Devils' Sydney Kasper off of a corner from Hannah Kirchner.
Amanda LaDue made both of her first half saves in the opening 18 minutes, which was followed by
Mariah Troje converting the team's first penalty kick of the season to go ahead 2-1. Troje also converted UWRF's only penalty kick in 2017.
UWRF entered halftime with a 7-5 advantage on shots in the first half, and Claudia Anderson also made two saves in goal for UW-Stout. The Falcons had three corner kicks and a shot from
Jasmine Hunn that was saved by Anderson in the opening minutes of the second half, but they failed to capitalize on these early chances. Marissa Steele was a key factor in the Blue Devils getting ahead in the game after she scored her second goal of the season in the 59th minute before adding another goal in the 67th minute off of a pass from Sydney Kasper. Neither team was able to find many opportunities for shots in the following 10 minutes. Both teams forced a save from the opposing goalie before Koehler's shot in the closing minutes helped spark the dramatic comeback.
Both teams took seven shots in the second half, and the Falcons finished with two more shots on goal and overall. LaDue now has a record of 6-1 this season and made four saves against the Blue Devils. Koehler and Altnau both led UWRF with two shots on goal. UW-Stout attempted twice as many corners as the Falcons and also committed three more fouls.
The Falcons now stand at 7-2-1 and 1-0 in conference play. They return home against UW-Platteville at 4 p.m. on Saturday after closing out a four-game road trip in which they posted a 3-1 record. UWRF is 19-3-4 all-time against the Pioneers.
