RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - UW-River Falls came up with two second-half goals to win their WIAC home opener against UW-Platteville 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Maggie Koehler scored her fifth goal of the season in the 52nd minute to even the game at 1-1, and
Jasmine Hunn scored her first goal of the season 15 minutes later to clinch a 2-1 victory at home.
The Falcons created the best chances early in the game, forcing three saves from UW-Platteville's Kathryn Flaherty off of shots from Koehler and
Rachel Windingstad. Koehler had five shots on goal, more than the Pioneers had the entire game. UWRF goalie
Haley Crosby saved a shot from Caelyn Steffens in the 23rd minute, but Steffens put a shot past Crosby in the 25th minute to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Steffens leads the WIAC with 17 goals in nine games, and she also has the most shots with 47. UWRF outshot UW-Plateville 7-5 in the first half but still trailed by a goal entering the second half.
Koehler had a header go high in the 50th minute, but responded two minutes later with a goal off of an assist from
Camryn Altnau. Almost half of Altnau's 10 goals this season have come from Koehler passes, but Altnau returned the favor for her third assist of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Maddy Meeker quickly forced a save from Crosby, and the Falcons started to settle in to look for the game-winning goal. Hunn subbed in for Windingstad in the 65th minute and quickly made an impact by scoring the decisive goal only two minutes later. The Pioneers weren't able to register a single shot in the final 18 minutes, and UWRF secured another win at home.
UWRF outshot the Pioneers 15-9 overall and had five more shots on goal. Crosby got her second win of the season and recorded three saves, while the Falcons had twice as many corner kicks as UW-Platteville.
The Falcons are now 8-2-1 and are first in the WIAC at 2-0. They will play at home on Wednesday when they face Augsburg in a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m.
