Falcons Compete in First-Ever Lacrosse Game

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - UW-River Falls played their first game in the lacrosse team's program history on Sunday afternoon, falling to Sewanee (Tenn.) 15-3 at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field. Gina Jablonski scored the first goal in the team's history with 13:33 remaining in the first half, and she added a second only a minute later. She scored her final goal of the game with 13 minutes remaining in the second half off of an assist from Emma Kohlbeck

Sewanee started the game off with a quick pace, scoring their first goal in less than two minutes. They found the back of the net six times in the opening 15 minutes, including goals from five different players. Jablonski's two goals cut the lead to 6-2, but the Tigers closed out the half with six goals in the final 11 minutes to take a 12-2 lead into halftime. Sewanee had a 28-5 advantage on shots in the first half, and they controlled the ball by being successful on 16 of their 20 clear attempts. They also now have an 85-17 advantage on goals through their first five games of the season.

Grace Zechman picked up the game's first yellow card only a minute into the second half, but Hattie Fogarty scored after being a player down to go up 13-2. Fogarty added another goal three minutes later, and the Tigers scored their final goal of the game with 18:42 remaining after being a player up after Cassandra Hubble's yellow card. The Falcons were able to hold the Tigers to zero goals over the final 18 minutes, and they only had four fewer shots than Sewanee in the second half. Ashley Olson played all 60 minutes in goal for UWRF and saved 13 shots.

Sarah Strand led the 10 goal scorers for Sewanee, tying Jablonski's effort with three goals. Zechman had an impressive six assists on the day, and Logan Bulls and Annie Sherrill anchored the Tigers' defense with four turnovers caused each.

Jablonski led the Falcons in almost every category, picking up six ground balls, winning four draw controls and causing five turnovers. Kohlbeck also had six ground ball pickups and five turnovers caused. The Falcons will be back in action on March 9 when they travel to Concordia, Wis.
