Lacrosse Wins Fifth Straight Game

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - UW-River Falls Lacrosse continued their winning ways by coming from behind to defeat the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 20-17 on the road on Wednesday night. The evenly-matched game was punctuated with eight goals from Gina Jablonski, which is the second time this year she has equaled the team record for goals in a single game. Her teammate Emma Kohlbeck also had eight goals in the last game against Augsburg, and she responded with a strong performance of her own by putting five goals past Eagles' goalie Sydney Werlein on Wednesday.

The Eagles were the aggressive one's early and took a three-goal lead at 5-2 after two goals from Ann Marie Ellis. Kohlbeck and Cassandra Hubble scored for UWRF in the early stages, but Jablonski didn't get her first goal until about 18 minutes left in the half. Hubble added another and Sophia Leong had two goals in the first half, but the Falcons still trailed 10-6 in the closing stages of the first 30 minutes. Leong was able to add her second goal as the half expired to cut the deficit to only three goals. The chance came after Kayla Gryniewski picked up a yellow card in the final seconds before Leong scored on an assist from Jablonski. UWRF had more total shots than the Eagles in the beginning of the game, and both teams were physical as they combined for 38 first-half fouls.

Jordyn Broberg made it a four-goal game in the first 30 seconds of the second half for Northwestern, but the Falcons scored the following five goals to go ahead 12-11 with about 22 minutes remaining in the game. Talia Sherry tied the game up at 12-12 only 19 seconds after Jablonski's goal, but UWRF soon found themselves up 17-13 after two goals from open play for Jablonski and another two from free position shots. Hanna Helms added a goal and assist in the final 11 minnutes of the second half, while Kohlbeck found the back of the net twice more to go ahead 19-15 with under three minutes to play. Logan Retzlaff cut it back to a three-goal advantage for the Falcons on a free position shot with 2:21 remaining before Jablonski sealed the game with her final goal at at 1:14 left in the game.

Grace Ross made a season-high 15 saves between the pipes for UWRF, while Kohlbeck and Jablonski also combined for five assists. The teams were only one shot apart overall and were tied on draw controls at 18 apiece. The Falcons are now 10-5 overall and have won eight of their last nine games in an impressive rookie campaign for the program. They will finish up the regular season by hosting Marian on Sunday at 4 p.m.
