RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls men's hockey team was defeated 2-0 Friday evening against Hamline University during the 2021-22 home opener at Hunt Arena.
Hamline goaltender Kevin Lake tallied 37 saves to earn the shutout, handing the No. 12-ranked Falcons their first loss of the season as their record falls to 3-1-1 overall.
UWRF totaled a season-high 37 shots, out-shooting the Pipers 37-17. Despite the Falcon shot advantage, the home team went 0-for-6 on the power play while Hamline capitalized on a couple chances to steal the road win.
The Pipers scored at 10:16 in the second, as Bailey Sommers put a rebound off the glass past Falcon netminder
Dean Buchholz for the eventual game-winner. Hamline scored the insurance goal just over seven minutes into the final stanza, a wrap-around goal after a scrum in front of Buchholz.
UWRFÂ pulled its goalie late and had opportunities on the man advantage, but ultimately couldn't best Piper netminder Kevin Lake.
Cayden Cahill and
Gabe Wahl each logged five shots on goal. Hamline also blocked 15 Falcon shot attempts. UWRF was strong on faceoffs, leading 43-29.
The Falcons return to Hunt Arena tomorrow night to host Gustavus Adolphus College.
